bromy
Not really a problem just need a answer to this, Work stopped us using the internet on the PC's there but they recently had a new server installed and have a wireless router, i took my laptop to work yesterday, fired it up and i can access the internet on it they have no security whatsoever, now my question is are they able to trace that someone is gaining access to their internet? some kind of log or something. nick
Dash Rendar
They can log packets through their wireless router and those packets will have your laptop's IP address. So it is possible to trace. So don't do anything *too* naughty!
JustGav
Pinch your boss's wireless card, and rename your laptop to the same name as his *grin*, then surf away on all the NWS sites
stealth
Just tell your laptop to pick up an IP address automatically via DHCP and when they realise that it is that IP address that is going out through the intraweb you've fecked off because they have no note of your Laptop on their Asset registers you could be anyone for all they know... someone sat outside....... to be honest if they were that bothered they would have WEP enabled at the Very least (not that it's that secure) so I can't imagine they are going to go through the packet logs
Soonto_HAS_soop
The question is, what speed connection do they have, and can you download movies overnight by locking your laptop in a cupboard? LOL!
Dash Rendar
Just tell your laptop to pick up an IP address automatically via DHCP... I was thinking along the same lines as you Stealth. However, the MAC address of the client will still be in the ARP cache and they could be logging this. (Although I doubt they would bother.) If this is a company laptop and they have any kind of asset tracking mechanism at all, the MAC address will be stored in the asset register too. (So they know who you are.) As you say, it looks like they're not bothered (or incompetent), but you can't assume that you will be totally anonymous just 'cause you're using DHCP. Of course, if it's your own laptop, then they won't have a clue who the MAC address belongs too. Ergo, they should be using MAC-address based packet filtering in addition to WEP or WPA.
