Celica GT4

Ok. ive weighed up some pro's and cons of a few cars i'm looking at after i sell my supe, mainly GT4's , 300ZX TT, GTO's, RX7's etc and after insurance being sky high on evo's ive started to look back to what i really want in a car. i like rwd but it seems like in typical british weather its just not fun to have a fast rwd in the wet most of the time, mainly cos i'm just scared of loosing it lol. So that scraps the RX7 300ZX etc, and GTO's seem to have a RAC badge permently placed over their head. So looked into Celica GT4 (i used to own a celica 1.8st) and i don't think its looks as amazing as the supe or some others but its the 4wd and the handling + power that i'm hearing about that sounds like a winner. Just wondered how they compare to the supe in acceleration, i'm looking at getting a WRC version (apparantly thats the one to get) and ive seen a few boosted up to 300bhp with minor mods. Just want to get a bit more info about them from actual owners, as ive noticed a few ppl on ere have got them and say they are good cars. I just dont want to be dissapointed with the acceleration and want something to compare it to- i had an integra type r before my supe and was wondering if the acceleration was anything like that? any info would be much appreciated :)

I used to have a ST205wrc... they are a nice car with good levels of grip.

I think there have been a few discussions about them on here where we have posted up information.

A search should bring them back for you.

just read the other forums search and they sound really good. think i'l get one as soon as i sell my supe. trying to find out what mods need to be done to reach the 350-400bhp mark. i saw a white gt4 the other day with the castrol/rally graphics on and white racing wheels, it looked stunning!

Tuning them is along the same principle as the MR2 Turbo (same engine) - so I'd go for the ST205 model, rather than ST185.

Over 350bhp, the charge cooler becomes a restriction, so you might need a FMIC (but if you sell your Chargecooler on the MR2 forums, you'll get a couple of hundred back for it).

Replace the turbo with something like a GT28RS

Upgrade fuel pump

ECU mapped in

etc.

You should be good for mid to high 300's there I think.

cheers, is it quite an expensive job to create this kind of power, like a 2-3k or like 5k with the new turbos?

Ive currently got a St205, running around 340bhp with 320lbs of torque, accelleration is not blistering but with a hard launch you can see 60 is circa 4.5s. To get much more than 350 you will be looking at a forged rebuild.

My spec is

Fmic,

Straight intake

3" exhuast

tt hybrid

link g3 ecu and boost at 1.15bar.

Around the bends is where these cars excell. You can put the power down nearly all the time through the twisties.

If you want any more info send me a pm

Chris

My mate still has his mint, standard un-molested (just wheels) st 205 for sale. He is in essex and selling it now for a very resonable £3500.

PM me if you want some more details.

If you buy something like that, chuck 3.5k at it you'll spend 7k on a car likely worth no more than 4-5k. You can get some really tidy motors for 7k that would perform pretty good in standard form likely losing less money.

Just imo of course. Depends how much you like celicas really, I used to love them but they are showing their age now. Similar ages evo's (7k will get a 1997-1999) look much better (again IMO).

Buy mine. I've done all the expensive bits on it already for you :D

Approx 330 bhp since last few mods. 1st to 3rd gear is fun but after that the drive train drains the power as it lacks the long legs of the supra but amazing round the bends and will eat an n/a for breakfast.

st205s are great cars. Bpu mods will see 300bhp and make a seriouslly quick road car. Theyre quite rare and have a zero chav image which is a good thing.

Only thing you need to watch out for is the suspension figure 8s which go on all st205s at 60k miles, that will cost you 1 grand to sort!

Much the same as a Supra then.

  • 2 months later...

came up against one of these this morning, wrc model, silver. my god i didint realise just how quick they were. acceleration was awesome, i mean not sure if it was a standard car but it didint half shift. both of us pulled up a 1 mile long hill, quite steep and i couldint catch him, mines a jap spec TT so very similar power to one of these wrc models. came off down on to a nice bit of flat straight road after the hill and my supra could easly stay with it mind. i think a standard TT supra wouldint have much of a look in around town/smaller roads againist one of these wrc celica, but on the right roads the supra i think would go town no problem. gt4 silmilar hp to the supra TT and probably 300kg lighter

Not that similar: The ST205 had 240bhp as standard. The JSpec TT supra was quoted as having 280bhp, but is widely thought of as actually having more.

ST205 stats

But I love these ST205s. I think, like the supra, they've dated very well. I'd have one in a flash, but I don't have the garage space, time or money for another toy.

or right, my bad, i read somewhere that the 205 had 280bhp(wrc version), normal gt4 185 version had 240-250bhp. well this car this morning was definalty not standard, was easy 300bhp, could tell by just the way in which the thing went. not sure about highway performance between the two cars, id say the supe would rule, but around the smaller roads etc 205 wrc would be hard to beat, i suppose with any of these cars ie, impreza, evo, pulsar etc 4x4 2.0l turbo charged cars are very hard to beat in every day driving.
