Renault Diesel question

Just been to view a little 2001 Renault Clio 1.5 DCI, interior is a bit shabby but not overly concerned about that. What does concern me however is that when the garage guy started it up the fan belt was squeeling (Will some WD40 sort this?) and when he revved the car there was a lot of black soot coming from the exhaust, so my question is,

What's this black soot? Is it just from standing for a while (Although the guy said it had only been stood about a week) is it something that will disappear after it has a long run to clear any carbon deposits out of the exhaust system or anything and if not is it an expensive fix and worth just walking away from?

cheers

if the fan belt is squealing and its tight it could be a knackerd bearing if its loose it will squeal try moving it up and down see how much free play there is if its sloppy its loose ask the garage to tighten it up.

black smoke from a deisel is usually unburnt fuel most older deisels smoke for a few seconds when started from cold but it should run clear in a few seconds, if it still smokes when it warm walk away.

cheers alfie, I took your advice and walked, did a little research and it sounds like it could be fuel injectors or or sensors among other things but I found another one over the weekend which i'm going for instead..... Can't wait to pick it up and get on with some cheaper motoring and save the soop for the weekends.
