d_d
Hi guys Ive just taken my gearbox out to replace the rear crank seal. I could see it was weeping. Just wondering if i should be putting any sealant on the seal?? as it looks like there was some old sealant on it before And is it a pig to put back in?? Also the bell housing on the engine there looks to be a join on the bottom which also looks very oily. Looks like a big job to fix tho??? Terminator
The old sealant may have be put there in an attempt to plug the leaking seal. Don't use sealant, just a new seal. The seal must be square on the way in so you will need an appropriate size drift to push it in.
Tricky-Ricky
Yes sealant is not a good idea, seals are best fitted dry, and driven in dead square.
d_d
ok so ill clean the surface up where the seal sits, and push the seal in squarely. Is it ok to put a smidge of oil round it to help it slide in
absz
make sure the seal sits flush as its very easy to push it too far into the casing
Chris Wilson
Yes, oil the lip, and the crank. Make CERTAIN you don't dislodge the seal tension spring when refitting. I remove the housing, fit a new seal on the bench, and refit the housing (using Toyota sealant) to the back of the block / top of the sump. d_d
i did consider that method chris, but the housing seemed to be on there proper, and was worried about resealing after. Is it my imagination or is there a join in the housing to. Im not sure if there is a smidge of oil coming out of that to altho looks like a major job. little num
no join on the housing, i removed the complete housing on mine and bought a tube of red sealer from my local car spares place, as toyota sealer is like £50 for a small tube and does exactly the same as the normal stuff you buy, the plate on mine was very tight but i flat head screw driver soon got it off, im in the process of changing the front seal as it started leaking quite bad, after removal its very easy to see why it was leaking, it had gone hard and the spring that normally holds it tight was off when i removed it.
