Coolant tank

Stupid question most likely coming up, but. The coolant tank, should it always be between the min and max or is that just an overflow tank. Noticed mine is pretty much empty. Checked the radiator and that is full.

Am i ok to just buy some ready mixed coolant from halfords to top the tank up?

Cheers

It should be between min and max when the engine's cold and parked on level ground. If the level's too high, the coolant has nowhere to go when it expands as it gets hot. If the level's too low, you run the risk of air being drawn into the cooling system and thus risking airlocks.

It'll be fine to just top it up with some fresh coolant, either ready-mixed or if you use concentrated stuff, dilute it with battery water (very pure: using tap water will cause limescale build-up). Use an ethylene glycol based coolant (almost all of them are from Halfords, motor factors etc). Personally I would try to match the dye colour with the stuff already in there, otherwise the resulting coolant will probably look a muddy brown. :)
