AlanM
This was a perfectly sweet engine until last night. Any ideas? Could a tappet be this noisey? Oil gallery to it blocked?
supra matt
sounds like bottom end mate! were you doing seed when this happened?
AlanM
It was going fine, not getting ragged. Went in to petrol station for 2 mins came out and it sounded like that ........ Its my sons car, he only went about a mile to petrol station, would never have abused it cold
supra matt
I take it you have checked the oil level ? i used to have a Astra gsi with one of these engines And they can take a hell of a lot of stick . is it modded?
AlanM
Yea, oil is fine, not modded at all. Looks like a strip down to find out anyway

Sounds like a tappet mate. Are Cavaliers not prone to that?
AlanM
Tappet was my first thought but it seems a bit "vicious" for that. Gonna take the head off for a start anyway, see if anything is amiss
supra matt
there hydraulic tappets on there so could be when there new and not filled there sound like the they take about 10 Min's to bleed out with driving so go for a short drive round the block and see if it starts to quieten down . absz
PS you might what to take the sump off and check the bigend shells?
AlanM
PS you might what to take the sump off and check the bigend shells? Yep, it may come to that, will whip the head off next weekend and see how it looks first
absz
it will be quicker to remove the sump and only cost you a gasket if thats not the problem. removing the head will mean spending more ie headgasket hydraulic lifters etc. and the problem might still be bottom end which i think it is. movistar
sounds like bottom end to me too...take the injector plugs/connector off one at a time to see if the noise reduces at any time...better to do it with these instead of the plug leads as it has a wasted spark system and your liable to burn out the coil pack when doing that. Obviously do it running.... Sounds like the metal egr pipe is split a little too... Sumps on these are rubber and fit around a baffle plate, sump bolts have to be replaced using thread lock and Torqued to 6nm...to stop pan gasket weeping oil through the bolt threads. AlanM
Now that head is off problem is easy to see - a great amount of one of the valve guides managed to get in to the cylinder to get mashed on to the top of the piston. Might have been lots of relatively small particles because the valve appears to be undamaged - not that it is going to be re-used. Photos of piston and head later
AlanM
Pics of the damage, don't look much for the noise it was making
brettjones
what are your plans with it now then do you have to skim it or just put it back together
AlanM
Picked up another head today and it is stripped and in to Precision Engineering (a local company for checking. The piston is knacked but the bore looks fine, it is not scored or anything. Think by the sound of him (my eldest) he might take the opportunity to do a total rebuild
