flukey-lukey
I think I spelt the title right Anyway, what are peoples views on this? Theres a place near me that hypnotises people to help them stop smoking and I was thinking of giving it a go (after failing using the nicotine gum, patches and inhilator thing) Apparently its about £100-200 so doesn't seem too steep if it actually works... Gaz6002
If you cut your arms off you won't be able to smoke. I was hypnotised once - it didn't work, so I remain sceptical. Maybe I had an idiot hypnotist though.

Its all in your head buddy. Regardless of what you do its your own mind that will convince you to give up. Whatever works... works. My Mother in law used to get some laser thing done to her ear. She said it helped. It does SFA but as long as her head is telling her she doesn't need to smoke because of this thing, she doesn't. Will power itself is a state of mind. What you use to get into that state of mind is up to you. As i said, whatever works.. works.

Class One
I tried hypnosis, and I'm afraid it didn't work for me either. Will power and patches worked for me. 5 years and counting.....
flukey-lukey
Yeh yeh I know its all in my head etc and will power is the key. But I suppose I WANT to believe that the hypnosis works so I can tell myself that I've stopped and thats that! Does that make sense? I do have quite a lot of will power, but I also have a lot of stress at work on a day to day basis... doesn't help

Yip, thats exactly what i said Tell you what, send me £100 and your phone number. I'll call you up on a daily basis and tell you that if you touch a cigarette me and the boys will be down with bats to break your legs. Job done! Todd
I tried hypnosis As did I, not for smoking though but it was a great help for me. As stated above you have to be receptive to it, not everyone is though. I had around 10 sessions in total and would recommend giving it a try, most decent places will not charge you for the first session as that's when they check to see if you are suitable for it. So If I was receptive to it I'd need 10+ sessions at £100+ a time... carrying on smoking may be cheaper
Todd
So If I was receptive to it I'd need 10+ sessions at £100+ a time eh! As I said, never went there for smoking (having a fag as I type ), I have no idea how many sessions it takes for stopping smoking.

You just have to find motivation. You said your GF didnt like you smoking. Would making a promise to her help? A bet? Every day you manage to go without you get a treat? You just have to find something that works. It doesn't have to cost any money. I'm most disciplined when i am challenged. I am very competetive and strong willed. Thats another reason to quit Mate it is not just your other half, it is a disgusting smell to anyone when you have just had a fag. Wait till you stop, you will enjoy and taste your food more and you will in time realise too how much you smell because of your fags. My mum has as she has not even got a strong sense of smell and she gave up after 40 years smoking and she has been stopped for 3 years now I think it is. I can remember when I was younger (maybe 10 or 11) my mum started smoking and she used to smoke in the car. It smelt sooooooo bad and on a few occasions I actually threw up because of it. I used to explain to her that it was the horrible smoke smell, but she seemed to have got it in her head that I was travel sick

I do have quite a lot of will power, but I also have a lot of stress at work on a day to day basis... doesn't help I don't think hypnosis is the way forward for you then. What other methods have you tried? Do you know what your triggers are for craving a cigarette? Stress is just an excuse and an easy one to use at that. Everyone has stress in their lives and there will never be a moment in yours where it's stress free, so it seems that you're using that to delay giving up. Here's what worked for me. It probably won't work for you, but some bits of it might. Set a date to stop. Set it perhaps a couple of weeks away, so it's something you can build up to. Don't put it off, just chose a date that's convenient for you and pereferably not a work day. On the day you give up, throw everything related to your smoking away. Fags, lighters, matches, ashtrays, the lot. I didn't smoke in my house, I used to stand on the kitchen step and put my dogends in a sand butt. I kept the fag butt, as a reminder of how filthy smoking is. If I was at home and felt then need for a ciggie I went and smelt the manky old fag butt. It was enough to kill the craving there and then, I can assure you Enjoy your last cigarette. Revel in it, every last moment. If you have any fags left throw them out. Don't cheat, you'll only be cheating yourself. Take it one day at a time. Set targets and rewards. Change your routine. Eliminate the triggers for your craving and do something else instead. Alcohol was a biggie for me. I could do a pack of 20 in a couple of hours in the pub, so I stopped going to the pub for 3 months. It was tough, but worth it in the long run. After a while you can set up bigger targets and better rewards. You might save some money but I found that I spent it on other things instead. Aim for something you might really want. I was a 40 a day man for 20 odd years. So on days off I wasted maybe 5 mins per ciggie sat at the back door. Thats over 3 hrs a day. Wasted lost time. On the down side I put on 2 stone, and I didn't immediately notice any gains in healt benefits. However, I hadn't seen my brother since I gave up (he lives in Oz) until last Xmas. He is just like I was, 40 a day. Now I've noticed a difference. Big style. Like I said, it might not work for you. But you don't necessarily need gimmicks to stop either. Good luck.
