Main Fault Problem

i realsie this is a shot in the dark at best but is there a difinitive list of problems that cause the main fault light, the big orangey !, to appear on the speedo.

picked the car up from a respray today and the thing came up and stayed up. even though nothing was done to the engine.

could it be something silly like air leak on the untake or something, that may have been knocked when they put the new front bumper on???

unfortunately info is thin and i appreciate any ideas/list of things it could be for me to start going through them 1 by 1.

by the way, the only problem the whole way home was the sbc not working, the car was overboosting to the max i set of 1.35, nothing else seemed out of place.

ok here i go;

checked the doors and boot - both ok and when open the little little comes on as expected

nic - yes i have had a new front bumper- and the little green light was flashing for the active spoiler so i pressed the button in for off and then unplugged the cable -= was that too far... will test today.

how do i check the fault codes - never done it on the soop.

the little bulb light is always on because previous owner took 1 set of brake lights out for use as the fog light. and i havent taken the time yet to figure out the cables to stop that from happening...

thanks for all the input - will keep look at your suggestions and give the answers later (i hope)..

I'd go with Nic's thesis, but leave the button plugged in. A while ago a garage did work on my car and knocked the button to let the active spoiler go back on. When I took it on the bypass on the way home I had the shock of my life when I saw the warning light come on under WOT. Luckily it was just the non-existant spoiler trying to come down.

For fault codes check here:

Edit: In fact you can see the forum highlights fault codes so just click on the hypertext :)

Hope this helps

  • 2 months later...

this is really getting annoying now, i have taken off the battery (for other reasons) so therfore should have reset the ecu but still everytime i switch on the ignition the main fault light come on and the active spoiler lights flashes constantly, wheter i press the 'down' then turn it off, turn it off or even try to leave it on. does anyone have any ideas how i can get this to stop, i dont think i could drive the car with the main warning light on constantly......

if i take out the spoiler ecu would that kill it???

could i place a small resistor between two point where the motor used to be to fool the ecu into thinking its still there???

i am so frustrated i am tempted to see if i can get an old motor just to plug in....

help please

its been totally replaced with a c-west front.

thing is i seem to have 'lost' the second turbo and since the light is on i'm not sure if the main ecu goes into some sort of emergency mode when the Main Fault light is on for extended periods. if not i have then got to go through the system again to see if i can fault find why the car went into respray running perfectly and came out running fine for 30 odd miles then lost turbo no 2.

i'll take the spoiler ecu out and then go from there i suppose.

thanks for the help
