Subaru impreza's advice please

I have just bought a 96 impreza wagon 2.0 non turbo tonight for £950.

Problem is that while at the previous owners house all seemed good and on a brief trip round the block all still fine.

Now on the way home all was good running wise but on lifting off the throttle there was a tapping noise coming from the engine but this disapeared under acceleration.

Everything pulls well and no noises anywhere else and upon phoning the guy when i got back he says it had been doing it since he bought the car and it was an underlying problem with this model.

He said it was number 4 piston if that helps.

hope someone knows something about this as the car is sold as seen and i have no comeback now.

Scoobynet or SIDC should be able to help you. The most common knock on the boxer engine is on cylinder 3 and it's usually the big end. Either that or the piston melts if you don't use a high enough octane fuel. But if it disappears under load, I can't see it being either of those.

Personally, if you're gonna buy a performance car, I'd take it for a little more of a drive than just around the block. As Luka says, he's probably been told it's a big job to fix and sh!t himself at the repair bill, hence buying a scooby for £950.

My mate's just bought a wagon with a blown head gasket for £700, and another bought an RA with a knocky big end for £650.

I also had a strange ticking noise from it but never missed a beat dont worry about it bud !!!

do they?! i feel sorry for you but in all fairness the failure came from buying a subaru anyhow:(

To be fair i have to say that scoobys are very well built as i had one last year, it was a wagon turbo 2000 i payed £1000 for it,

It had a big oil leak from gearbox and power steering both got fixed up for £100 i then drove it to the nurburgring thrashed its nuts off for 9 laps and drove back to uk and was still running sweet.

It had 140,000 on clock and was a M reg also super chipped to around 280bhp i never had one problem with it, and had so much fun in return would do it all over again :)

i also sold it for £1500 when i got back home so made £400 quid onit :)

mine makes loads of noises, but still happily runs 300bhp all day long. Mines a 96 sti....

They seem to sound fecked well mine did :) but just keep on trucking my impreza had so much hammer i really did not think i would have made it home from germany after going round the ring,

But it did such a soild car, I know if i give my supra that much stick something would brake but will never know as will never abuse the supra to nice for that :) Thats what impreza's are for.. :D

Precisely... £2400 for 300bhp.... :D

Got to the car the other day, found a new door dent, looked at it and laughed, thinking that the other idiot probably damaged their door more :D
