Digsy
Isn't celebrating anything inherently English considered racist these days?
Alex
So if you shut down British business for a day...how much do you think that would cost??? And who would pay? Yep, us. It would be nice to have but it'll cost ya...
Scoboblio
I'm not sure of the actual cost, but I think an opportunity to properly show our respect and pride on our national day would be worth it As long as it takes the form of a drinking contest. SkyJawa
It bloody should be a Public Holiday. The Irish get St Patricks day.

J4CK50N
Any more holidays are good for me - I only get 20 days plus bank hols!!!!
Alex
Wasn't St. George a Turk though? He's not even born a Brit? Why do we have a day for him? There was another Patron Saint before him...can't remember who, but he actually did some heroics rather than have everything based on a fairy story (slaying Dragons ) which has obviously suffered from Chinese whispers. Not trying to whip up ill will but is he REALLY the best choice Britain can come up with? Lol guess it's suitable in the current climate to have an OFFSHORED Patron Saint. lol
Scoboblio
And St Patrick was born in Scotland Regardless of St George's historical credibility our national day still needs more recognition ps, check out the results on the vote
terribleturner
Any more holidays are good for me - I only get 20 days plus bank hols!!!! I get 18 and no Bank Holidays:cry: Hey Alex if you like we'll all take the day off and you can work. Can't say much fairer than that now can we
Alex
Terrible - I'm not saying I wouldn't want the day off, I'm just saying you don't get something for nothing, it would cost us all...in directly. I'd like to know the cost.
Nick
Too right it should be ! It's about time people took some pride in their country instead of treading on eggshells for the politically correct morons that proliferate our media.
Scoboblio
I understand completely what Alex is saying, bank holidays cost the country money, but then again look at the number of public holidays the rest of Europe gets (and South Africa ) Personally I think our national pride should outweigh any cost... when do we actually get a chance to unashamedly celebrate being English other than a big football match? I'm all in favour of it, even though it would mean another day at work for me because I don't get public holidays off
terribleturner
Just pulling your leg Alex. But your right. Nothing in this world comes for free, so what do they want in return??
Alex
Yep don't get me wrong I'd like to see a bit of national pride, I would like to have our Saints day off...but I'm not sure we have the right Saint as our Patron...

Green Peace
I think we should just have a minutes silence instead in honour of St Patricks day! I'm proud to be English it would be nice to see the English flag more, as it would the Union Jack...its a shame it gets bastardised by a few National Front morons! I too think This country needs to promote its identity...the Jubilee was a really good thing and did show how many were 'sensibly' patriotic, I think St Georges day should be a national holiday and we should celebrate it....good excuse to get pissed and puke up again! Soonto_HAS_soop
Why do we all not just throw a sicky?
Pete
I agree with you Alex. If I gave all my 15 staff a day off that would cost me not only in wages, but lost revenue for that day plus the day before and after (where people wind down and everyone is hung over!). "Why do we all not just throw a sicky?" - I know it's only a joke but it seems to be the real opinion of many nowdays. As a race, (in my experience) the majority of British people are clock watching bums who expect to get fat wages for showing no initiative, dodging hard work and doing fack all. Roll on the flamage! :flame: :flame: Second thoughts... Another day dedicated to drinking beer excessively can't be a bad thing really..can it? Sharpie
It seems that the St George's flag has only become popular due to the football over the last 5yrs or so... It should be a National holiday.
CJ
Should Wales also have a national holiday for St. Davids day and Scotland a day for St. Andrew? I am with Rogue on this. I would have to pay 100 staff to have a day off. I would not gain any sales for the day so therefore no profit. Thats straight off the bottom line. Now, if the company is then not doing so well and we look to cut costs by losing heads, then we are classed as ruthless b*stards and yet the cost of that day and other days are never considered. What i dont agree with is his opinionn regarding Brits as clock watching bums. In my opinion, those people are usually like that when they are treated as "workers" and not part of the organisation. I have found that when they are truly seen as an assett and not just a cost then I find their attitudes are different
