auto to manual conversion

im seriously considering dropping a manual 6 speed in my car. one thing i cant fathom is what to do with the ecu side of things. i searched everywhere i know, but cant find any info. can anyone answer these questions for me?

 

1. is the ecu the same for auto & manual (part no.s)?

 

2. is the autobox ecu a seperate item?

 

3. would the wiring associated with autobox shifting just be removed from the ecu? if so would this not generate an error?

 

4. would ignition and fueling maps be the same?

 

5. does anyone know anybody who has done this?

 

6. r there any imperative questions im not asking?

6. This has been asked about more than a few times before, try a search. The question you should be asking is if it's cheaper to sell your car and get a manual. Answers more than likely yes.

 

If you're going to all the hassle you might as well slap a big expensive sequential system in it. After all you must be made of cash...

5. Yes has been done in the states by a few people. The best reccomendation is to try and have a donor car present.

 

6. It's quite an involved swap, but not as bad as people first thought.

 

Branners posted a link to an article that somebody had written in the states about this exact swap a little while ago, so if you do a search you should be able to find this post.

Martin, are you sure about 2? I know the ECU's are a bit different, but I still thought there was kind of external control box as well.

 

I'd swear i'd seen an auto ecu floating about (says the guy that was going to wire his RLTC into the aerial control).

 

6. Even if it's easier than first thought, surely it's cheaper to swap the car? But I guess that's dependent on what the car has had done to it.

ive seen the american stuff, but no one really goes into detail, especially with the electronics. i cant find anything on here that covers it in any great detail either.

 

the link branners posted is a photo guide. this guy hasnt changed the ecu, or has no details of it.

 

i cant see why the ecu's would differ (xcpt for the auto box control). why would the maps b different? same air going in, same rev limit, same fuel going in. when an engine is mapped on an engine dyno (as the toyota map was made) theres no gearbox, drive shafts, diffs, axles, wheels present. so how would it be different? ive never seen a seperate ecu pinout diagram for an auto and manual. martin could u check the part numbers please, if u havnt already.

 

gareth, please dont get the impression ive got alot of cash, i havnt :(. it wouldnt take much to scupper my plans for this, eg. new ecu. the only reason im considering this is ive bought a 6speed for £250!! a nice big sequential would be very nice, but totally out of my financial reach. as for getting a new car i like my aero top and have already spent more than my missus would like sorting it so far. so the car swap is not an option.

 

with point 3, what i meant was if u can keep the auto ecu, u would have a load of wires left, after the coversion, that used to control the solenoids etc. would removing these from the ecu loom cause errors?

they didnt know what it was, so snapped it up :)

 

ive sourced nearly everything else s/h xcpt shifter, flywheel, clutch, interior shift trim and ecu.

 

so ive just his ecu business to sort and to persude my mate to give me a hand to fit it (in 2-3 days :) )

 

regarding the mines ecu, i was sure id seen somewhere a second autobox ecu.

The ECU's are defenitely different. If you look at one it should have manual or auto stamped on it. In the MKIII gearbox control is done externally by a seperate ECU, then on the MKIV they brought this function inside the main ECU.

 

The maps i feel will be different, because remember the auto Supra retards timing and closes the traction control throttle butterfly on gear shifts. Unless this can be controlled purely by the traction ECU....which i doubt.

 

Eyefi - Could you post the link that you have found so that i can see if it is the same article i remember.

 

A 6 speed box for £250 is a bargain, and at the end of the day even if you don't use it, you know that when somebody elses goes up the swanny you would be able to sell it on easily.

If I remember correctly, the guy said you can keep the stock loom and just pick and choose the right wires to plug in to the Manual ECU, so it wont need a full rewire but will need a manual ECU. You might be able to get the auto ecu to work, but the sensors it relies on from the auto box wont return any signals so it may have a bit of a fit.

you dont do things by halves,i can see it been a nightmare.i wanted a 6 speed a while ago,changed my mind in end due to all hasstle of selling and looking for a new car.

 

i have a yearning for a skyline they seem loads faster than supras , maybee its a bit of something you aint got and would like.

 

just rang up about a 96 780bhp skyline r33 gtr for £19,995 it was the one that was on top gear and max power

 

its a black one

 

if i remember its the one vicky butler henderson was driving

sounds smart for money.

 

feel like i am wasting money on supra with it been auto and all.

i would have thought it would be better doing a part ex on yours,cant see it costing loads more to go for 6 speed.but the auto to manual sounds expensive

That spec is utter crap.

 

Its running standard turbos...

 

Theres a lot of info (mainly slating's!) about it on the GTR board.

Would love to know how he knows that - it hasn't been dyno'd

 

If it was 780bhp, then surely he would know the spec - he didn't when myself and a mate phoned the guy about it a little while ago.

 

And yes, it is running standard turbos.

Cos it wasn't all about performance for me

 

I wanted a GT car rather than an all out performance car.

 

I will have a Skyline next, but it'll be in addition to the Supra...

Yup, available - no skyline in the country runs 2 bar let alone on stock turbos. You get about 5 mins use out of it and it'll go boom.

True, and I have the greatest repect for em. Was having a sit in a R34 GTR UK spec in bayside blue. What a car. One day...

he will get found out and wont sell the car.

can always see the supra playing second fiddle to a skyline,unless some of the so call big power supras prove otherwise.

i love my supra best car i have had so far

have yet to see a fast supra in the uk

seems like he has the best one on here

must have spent a fortune on it.

yep, thats one. the link at the bottom is quite good too.

 

there is no mention of an ecu in his invoices or the conversion. it does say that a manual *loom* is not required. im sending the guy an email tonight.

 

i think yr right, it will be a case of swapping in a manual ecu. at the end of the day u never really know exactly what them little buggers r doing. i dont think its worth trying to work around that one.

 

theres also loads of topics in supraforums, but i cant find the one, that alot refer to, that covers it in good detail.

 

i think the mechanical side of this conversion is quite straight forward, its the electrical side that im still not sure about
