AlexJames
... Steam pours out of the radiator over flow bottle when idling... Just had to replace the water pump as the gasket was almost non exsistant. Have a new radiator in it... Any ideas? There is no viscous fan attached at the moment, so without that air being pushed through the radiator, could that be the reasons why the water is over heating? (FYI, its parked up... im not driving her
JustGav
It would get hot....if there is no fan. If there was no fan and you were driving it it would probably remain cooler as air flows over the rad.
AlexJames
Thats what I thought... but would it really cool it enough to stop it from boiling up?
tooquicktostop
Did the new rad come with a new rad cap
JustGav
Thats what I thought... but would it really cool it enough to stop it from boiling up? Which? The fan or the air flow during driving? The answer is quite a lot actually... The radiator relies on getting rid of the heat into the air, if there is no air flowing, it will simply heat up and saturate the immediate area and subsequently the water leaving the rad will be warmer, and it simply gets worse. AlexJames
Did the new rad come with a new rad cap Yeah one did... but Im using the old rad cap cause its better looking... maybe a mistake? .... Surley the rad cap is working correctly though because the steam is escaping? Which? The fan or the air flow during driving? The answer is quite a lot actually... No, the cap may not be sealing so it could be preventing the pressure building in the system and this the water boils at a lower temp and hey presto you have steam humm... i see your point... righty, i need to get me a new fan then... which leads me onto my next question.... where from? an alloy one would be prefered No, the cap may not be sealing so it could be preventing the pressure building in the system and with this the water boils at a lower temp and hey presto you have steam get a stock fan, may not look great but does the job 100%, Jezz or Keron will have them

Chris Wilson
Using an old rad cap because it is "better looking" has to be just about the most bizarre thing I've read on here in ages, and that's saying something these days

Chris Wilson
The one way valve in the (pretty) cap has probably gone, go for a plain Jane Toyota one and keep everything crossed.
