caseys
Hi all, Does anyone have sailing experience? I've decided to be a bit too bravado-esq I think and have volunteered to be part of a crew on a 68' Clipper yacht for this year's Round The Island yacht race. How hard is sailing around Cowes? The first things to consider are: 1) I haven't been on a boat since I was 7 years old. 2) That boat was a ferry. 3) I was sea-sick in epic proportions. I think the only other time I threw up more was when I fractured my skull in a BMX incident and had concussion. (stomach acid is green btw...) The race goes from Cowes and around the Isle of Wight. Last year one of the Clipper boats did a 'bob' and everyone briefly went upside down in the water. Lovely. It's an 8 hour race. Here's a linky to the boats: http://www.clipper-events.com/index.php/the_yachts/ A linky to the race: http://www.roundtheisland.org.uk/ It's all for charity so I'm not backing out. Have I bitten off more than I can chew though? It all looks quite impressive but I'm daunted by it now! Teaches me for volunteering. Will post a linky up sometime for sponsorship if anyone's interested in donating. I'll put some photos up after the event. Maybe I could wear a mkivsupra.net t-shirt Si

RedM
How hard is sailing around Cowes? Not that hard. They aren't very fast swimmers. I once crewed a yacht to the Med and did regular runs from Brighton to Fecamp. Keep your wits about you and make sure the first time you go sailing isn't on the day! It's actually very easy. Navigation on the other hand......
dangerous brain
I've been on a 55'r a few times. If you are fit and able bodied and alert then you'll be fine. I would have a look at doing your comp crew course before you go so that you get the most out of it and so that you aren't a hindrance on the boat.
