Shadow Beast
Well just driven back from Doncaster after having been fitted up for my new bike for the up and coming triathlon season, it should be with me in a week after its been built, i have attached a picture of the demo model but mine will be the same. grahamc
whats the weight of the bike coming in at?
Shadow Beast
as is 8.2Kg but by the time water and spares are added its going to be around 9.5Kg something like that, although training rides i dont mind loading it up, but comps i wont takes spares certainly for Olympic distance as a flat tyre is not worth repairing as my time will be no good at that point, Ironman will be different though. colsoop
Your using that for training rides too ?

Richie 8.2, thats a little on the heavy side for a carbon bike and the price you are paying! My standard road bike is 9.3kgs and my mates (that takes it way to seriously) comes in at 6.2kgs the tri bars add a fair bit, dont they? Your using that for training rides too ? Friends of mine that ride silly price bikes (like the one above), trains on a set of training wheels, which are heavier and not carbon with a spare rear cassette. Then he uses the lightweight carbon ones and good cassette for race events.
merckx
I've never seen a bike with that much carbon before. How's it standing up by itself?

Then he uses the lightweight carbon ones and good cassette for race events. Its not the price. Just for racing you want all your components to be in tip top condition. Training rides particularly in the colder months are dirty wet and grimey affairs. Coming back from a ride on the weekend chalking up thew miles down country roads and my bike was a state. I wouldn't want to gunk up and wear down my components when i could have a training bike for that instead Edit to add. I do like the bike a lot
Shadow Beast
yeh to be fair i do have my winter bike that is used in all weathers, this one will only be used in the good weather, but yeh i do need to do the miles on it to get my body used to the fit of the bike, they are totally different to road bikes, i am hoping my wheels from the winter bike will fit in, the guy at the shop seems to think it will. 8.2Kg is what is quoted on another site, although it does not say what frame size it is, my one is a small so it may come in lighter, i'll weigh it when it arrives next week. richie
Shadow Beast
Thought i would just update you on this, had my first one this year, it was a sprint distance:- 400m Swim 06:47mins 20km Bike 40:55mins 5km Run 21:13mins so quite happy with the results, came in 83rd out of nearly 500 competitors. Roll on the rest of the season. Oh and the bike weighs in at 15lbs without water bottles Richie
grahamc
Very good times! I expected better from a bike that only weighs 6.9kgs

grahamc
long time, I know... just wondering how you are finding the bike??
juanchan
Very nice bike, but having spent hours at work helping one chap sort out the issues Planet X have caused him, I'll be steering clear in future. Just getting into road riding here, and recently acquired a Trek 2 series to learn the ropes.
grahamc
do you mind expanding on the issues?
colsoop
I found them to be very helpful in answering my queries. As Graham Said what were the issues ?
juanchan
Primarily that they're unable to honour a price on a bike. Myself and a colleague have recently set up the cycle to work scheme at my work, and in the time it took for one chap to receive his voucher to collect the bike with (about a fortnight), Planet X had increased the price by 20%, thus rendering his voucher as useful as a chocolate fire guard. I'm not completely up to speed on how Planet X run, but my understanding is that they purchase bikes and bike equipment from struggling retailers, which they in turn sell on to the customers. I've been told that that is the reason that they are unable to honour any price agreed - in 2 weeks time they may no longer have any of frame X, Y or Z available, or they might do, but they cost 50% more from a different struggling retailer. Same goes for all the componentry. Long story short is that Planet X have told him to either accept a lesser bike for the value of his voucher, or cancel it and re-apply for one at the new value. Bearing in mind that they still won't be able to honour that new, hiked up price... He's understandably unimpressed and is currently in the throes of obtaining a bike through a bike shop in the area. This is my only dealing with Planet X, and I'm a little concerned at their apparent lack of customer care and blase attitude towards us. I'm glad they didn't mess you around on a considerably more expensive bike though!!
Shadow Beast
The way Planet X work as far as i know is they buy straight from china for all the shimano group sets and the frames are made else where, last year it was announced that there was going to be a price hike on cycle parts. Some body on the Tritalk forum pointed out the same as you about a 20% price hike. Like any shop you will always get differing views on a company, When i went up there to be measured for my bike they were very helpful, and the bike was set up to suit, I had a couple of issues with them when i had the house fire but it got sorted (disgruntled employee not passing on info). On the Triathlon site i use they are regarded as a company that serves well, however............ the bikes are good if you are on a budget and what you get for what you pay cant be argued with, there are a lot of different bikes out there now made by many companies that can match but at a price. I have covered many miles on mine last year and tonight entered Ironman Lanzarote which i will take the stealth with me on. I have just purchased a Trek 4.5 madone which i use for social riding and training.
Shadow Beast
long time, I know... just wondering how you are finding the bike?? grahamc
I ended hurting my knee while running, so was not able to run or cycle Did a fair bit of swimming though... Back into my training now and going to be signing up to GRIM in the next week or so. See how that goes and maybe then look at a triathlon again...
