dan4
Hey i have a customer with a 7mgte supra and i have found the headgasket to have failed. He is already running ARP head studs but i am reluctant to use another stock gasket as imho they are not up to the job especially seeing as its fairly highly spec car. Has anyone any info on headgaskets that they have proven to be a good upgrade?
wantasupra
was it a genuine toyota gasket ?. i was running geniune one with arp bolts. hks gasket seems to be the most used with arps. but need a really good finish on the cylinder head. b
Branners
Defintely worth asking over on http://www.mkiiisupra.net, but from what I remember....the stock gasket part for changed by Toyota towards the end of the mkiii run. It was an improved design which shouldnt blow quite so easily. However the cooling on a mkiii was borderline at best. When the gasket blows the radiator loses efficiency enough to cause the HG to go again and again. If you do the HG also replace the radiator. bondango
Is the car running Stock boost? if not forget about a Stock headgasket. Best Combo i have found for the 7mgte is the Cometic MLHG with Arps. I have used every known headgasket over the years and found the Cometic MLHG to be more fogiving. Arps can be reused If they are Studs (get some arp moly lube)... You will need to have the head checked for warpage and cracks. Also, If the head has had work before you will need to measure it as it can only be skimmed once TBH. You can check if the facing surface has reached the water neck area. If in Doubt - scrap the head and get another (stock is 116mm IIRC) Both BLOCK and HEAD need a proper suface job with an RA of around 30, many people dont get the block done...and the HG will fail again. This is very important on the 7M..your throwing money and time away if you dont get this done. You need to try and determine what caused the Gasket failure, to much boost, bad cooling, combination of both.. 1. Inspect and replace if necessary Water pump, thermostat, Radiator, Vicous coupling, and coolant hoses that look suspect. 2. If the car is running above stock boost, invest in a decent Radiator such as a Koyo or Fluidyne...Remove EGR completely, The 7mgte needs all the help it can get in the cooling department. 3. DO NOT USE gaskets other than Genuine toyota gaskets, cheap head sets may look tempting...until your stripping an intake manifold becuase of a failed intake gasket, or head off because of a failed VS oil seal. I have Done a total of 4 7Mgte headgasket jobs since Xmas, everyone of these cars had a receipt for a relacement head gasket with in 10K-15K of the current odometer reading. On another note, as a given with the 7MGTE, the forst thing to do is a retorque (85ft lb on the Arps) as this has cured HG issues.
