johnny g
I use 123-reg myself. Got a fair few sites through them, and they've all been easy and painless. Hosting is done elsewhere, though.

stevie_b
Buying the domain and hosting is the cheap bit: getting someone to design and/or build the website for you will be the pricey bit. Unless you're interested in it yourself, I would get someone else to do the designing, otherwise it'll look like one of those personal web pages that people set up circa 1998. When checking whether a .uk domain is actually available to buy, use the nominet website. Some less-than-scrupulous hosting companies will buy up the domains you search for (using the form on their website) and sell it to you for an inflated amount. Not sure if this still goes on though. To continue the reg plate analogy, nominet only deals with UK domains (i.e. anthing.uk): IIRC they wouldn't have any control over .com domains, much like the DVLA have no control over reg plates in the US or Japan. (Is that right, peeps?) I can't remember which organisation sells .com addresses though....
Stonkin
That is correct. Not sure who controls the .com's. We are a hosting/managed services company at my work, and all .com's are purchased through Network Solutions. .uk's always bought direct through Nominet as we are a reseller
Stonkin
Someone at work just mentioned they thought Nominet were the 'DVLA' also for .com's, but i didnt think that was the case.

It needs to look beyond proffesional though. Price isnt an issue, i'm just scared that if i give to someone else to do it won't be exactly like how i envisage it...umm
Stonkin
Just make it extremely clear what you are after Matt, its your site and your paying after all. As with modding a car, make sure you see plently of a chosen designers work before commiting
stevie_b
I am interesting in designing it myself because i know exactly how i want it to look. I think it should be OK to design it yourself then hire someone else to implement it. Whoever implements it might have some ideas of their own when you show them your design. Matt H
What's the catch? I went on 1and1.com and the website name i want, provided as their basic package is free?!
stevie_b
Sounds unusual. You don't usually get something for nothing! These hosting companies certainly ain't no charity! Things to check: 1) does their basic package include any hosting (you'll need this), or just the domain purchase (you'd still expect this to cost a little bit, but you're talking a few quid a year, instead of a few quid a month)? 2) does the package include enough download usage for your site? Many packages will impose a limit on how much data all the visitors (in total) can download/upload each month, much like some broadband packages do. e.g. If your site's going to be the next ebay, you'll need more than 10MB per month! This isn't something you have to get right up front though, because you can usually switch to a package which allows more data throughput if you cross their palm with silver. Edit: just had a look at their website. They're advertising "FREE domains included with all web hosting plans." That's normal: they'll give you the domain for free as long as you buy hosting as well. Hosting is worth much more than just the domain rental, unless you want a sought-after domain name.
Matt H
woohoo! I am now the proud owner of my first domain name!! lol. So, i need: hosting email website developer moving forward
Tee from China
I used Netfirms from 2005 to last year but transferred to another company as they got blocked by the Chinese government for saying bad things used to buy the cheapest package at $4.99 for the first year and $9.99 each year after. I used MS Publisher to make the site then used Netfirms to upload to the WWW. Now I use a Chinese supplier called NiHao3donline which was started by a friend here in the PRC and they host everything for the same cost as before. The site builder is very user friendly and if you go to my site you can see what I did with mine. There are a lot of web hosts to use and it just depends on what you want the site for and use a name people will remember and use to browse with which means you company name will come up on the top in google etc. I chose mine which seems to works OK in the US and Australia but not so good in China:( or the UK Hope this help you decide, Tee
