Matt H
I've never done this before, so need some advice on how domain names / owning a domain names works, how to get one and any catches etc. What we want is: a website address (domain?) somewhere to host the site (i presume that's neccessary) email function i.e, email the domain name. Advice on how to build a website - software or just get it done proffessionaly? I've been on a few sites that seem to rent you a domain name? i even typed in something ridiculous and they offered to rent it me?! Don't understand how that's possible? don't they have to own the name to be able to rent it? do you have to rent it? Ta Matt
jamesmark
If you use a company to design it for you, they will more than likely host it for you too. So a one stop shop, but probably the dearest option. It may be cheaper getting someone who does it in their spare time/as a hobby to design it, I am sure they will also know the best and cheapest host sites. Al Massey
I have recently bought a domain name. Cost a fair bit of money like. You will prbably find that the companies that offer to rent or sell the domain name has bought as many as possible to sell on at a profit. I have a friend who owns a hosting and website building company if you want some info
Mike
Lots of companies will sell you a domain and some hosting, and a few email addresses - any ISP these days. Have a look at; Reg123 or Easily
DamanC
Simple steps - Buy a domain Name - Buy a hosting Package (easiest is to buy one with who you buy your domain with) - Email funtion normally is bundled with a hosting package - Always best to get someone to design the site for you. Ignor the rent things, sounds like a load of old tosh. Alternatively, and web developer can do the lot for you
DODGYDODDS
i used 123reg, but they aint very good, poor communication ( took me a month to find a phone number) imo the best hosting i have come across is http://www.uh-hosting.co.uk, they can sort you a domain and host at very good rates, they have excellent support ( what you need if your site goes down) and there security is top notch, ive never been hacked, since i have been with them

However you go about paying for the domain name, and whoever you pay it to, if it's a .uk domain, then you only ever get it for two years at a go. After two years you will need to re-register the domain. Some companies will automatically do this for you some won't.
stevie_b
I've used 1&1 (http://www.1and1.co.uk?) for domain purcahse and hosting: they seemed OK.

Also, tell him to check the English / Grammer on his home page, i've noticed a few niggles

Mike
Think of a domain name as you would a private reg - if it;s available you can have it for the going rate (usually £5), and if it's something more desirable you'll pay for whatever it's going for. Domains are unique, you can't have two people using the same one.

If its normal or less desired names than he can offer deals just like most companies. You have to pay extra for a good name
Mike
Understand that, but how can multiple people appear to have it for sale / rent? What's the best way to search for the one you want? Until they're actually used, they are literally in the cloud and all they need is someone to register them - this obviously isn't a physical thing and different companies will charge you different prices. Not sure what you mean by "rent everything?" I think he's confusing them with the Van rental company 1&1?
Al Massey
I bought my domain name from these http://www.shores.co.uk/ they also do rentals of domain names There are like many a company that has either purchased or has a licence to sell/rent domain names and register them through http://www.nominet.org.uk/
Matt H
So like loads of companies sell reg plates, the DVLA is the one they all come from and all sites have to register through them... Is http://www.nominet.org.uk/ the DVLA of domain names then?

Mike
Cool, seems as though it's cheaper to go via an agent though Bizzare.. Yes, and make sure you renew with the agency too... Nominet will try and charge you £100ish before they release it back to the world.
