Supra-Brett
OK, ive searched and searched and all i can find is a guide to change a TT clutch with 6 speed box. I have an N/A with a 5 speed box. Has anyone ever produced a guide to doing this ? What are the hints and tips ? Is it a nightmare ? What tools are needed ? HELP

merckx
I cannot imagine there's going to be much difference between the two. If you would be prepared to do it on a 6 speed gearbox then you shouldn't have any worries about doing it with the 5 speed box. Have a read of the manual for the 6 speed gearbox to see if you're going to be competent enough. Obviously you'll need to lift the car up high enough so you can slide the gearbox away from the engine to be able to get access to the clutch. In the past I've just fabricated a cradle which I bolt to the trolley jack which can be used for manouevering the gearbox. online manual

Ive never changed one before, but my father in law is a mechanic so we were going to give it a go. I would still like to see an exact 5 speed N/A clutch changing guide if anyone has one, just in case its a bit different to the TT and provides some extra insight into the job. merckx
Unfortunately all the workshop manuals appear to be for the TT Supra. I can't imagine you having any problems if you're doing it with your mechanic father in law.
Homer
The (complete) paper manual covers the 5spd, if you get desperate I can scan the pages in. Can't imagine there's much difference though.

Homer
I didn't know that, I thought the online and paper manuals were the same. The manuals CJ made cover most models (NA, TT, auto and manual, but not VVTi) and in extensive detail, the online one's I've seen only contain a fraction of the pages. In paper version they're about 9 inches thick when stacked up!
bignum
The only major difference between 5 and 6 speed is the way the clutch fits to the flywheel, ie the clutch on the 6 all fits on a hub on the input shaft and stays on there when removing the box, so theres no lining up to do with the clutch disc, whereas with the 5 the clutch has to be lined up on the flywheel correctly for it to go back together, this is where a lining up tool comes in handy(some clutch kits come with 1) or a cut off input shaft from an old box. Supra-Brett
Ok thanks for all the advice and links. Ive been looking at the prices of clutches and Mr Toyota charges about £400 for an OEM clutch. I can get ones off E-bay for just over £200 but ive found this one on an American website for just over £100 + postage which seems a bargain (not sure what postage will be yet) http://www.clutchcityonline.com/products/16-085.shtml Does anyone know if these Exedy ones are OK ? Im guessing these will still be OK for our LHD cars ? Will i have to pay any other taxs to import ? Any advice welcome

Supra-Brett
Anyone know if this clutch will be OK ? http://www.clutchcityonline.com/products/16-085.shtml Advice on postage/taxes from the US ?
dani_r
You shouldn't have too much problem I would have thought, it's relatively low value, and if the person sending it marks it as low value then you won't have any issues. Postage could be a few quid as I would imagine a clutch kit is rather heavy! Seems a good price though, I wouldn't know if it's any good though. My clutch has started slipping nicely so I now need a new clutch, I'll be watching your thread closely! D

dani_r
Surely someone must have experience with Exedy?
Guest OkinawaSupra
I have used Exedy Clutchs for other cars not a supra.. Very good quality and I never had a problem. Then again that was on a Honda not a Supra. At the same time I dont mean to jack your thread up but has anyone suffered from a noise from the clutch that sounds like a squeeky bearing. I say that because if I push the clutch in about 10mm the noise goes away. throw out bearing?
