mitchell
Hi - Im sure this is pretty basic but I have an issue that hopefully someone can help with.... I have a n/a auto that I have been working on (bodywise) and dont start the engine up very often. It seems that the battery drains quite quickly and even when I have had the car running for periods at a time, it doesnt retain any charge. What should I be looking at that would cause the battery not to charge properly. New battery is only 6 months old....is it the solenoid that perhaps needs replacing?! Thanks
marbleapple
I had this problem when i 1st bought mine. Drove me mad. 1. Make sure the connectors are firmly attached to the battery (one of mine was slightly broken and thus broke the loop) 2. Check the alternator 3. Check their isnt a drain. I had 2 and 3 done by a garage but if you search on here they tell you how.
Rob Dublin
As said above but do the following test. Run engine, use a multimeter on the terminals of the battery. If alternator is working properly you will have 14v. You have a drain if this is so. If not, suspect the alternator.
sidewaysdan
how do you find the drain?
Rob Dublin
I'd imagine with more luck than judgement if you're not a mechanic! Listen for clicking noises when reconnecting the battery or look for frayed wires. I'm no expert so hopefully someone will give you a proper answer leter or more likely tmrw. mitchell
Thanks chaps - I may just drop it into the garage for them to ascertain the fault and then get the part in question and fit myself cheers
