Am i the worst neighbour ever?

Ok. I have to set the scene...

When i bought my house a couple of years ago, after moving in you could sometimes smell a faint smell of gas in the front room in the morning when you came downstairs. We called the gas people and they came and checked the cellar for leaks as the meter is right below the living room. They found nothing at all. We figured it was just a slow leak and i just ignored it. It wasn't happening all the time as it only seems to build up if i kept the door to the living room closed. And most of the time its kept open.

2 or so years pass...

We have recently got 2 kittens and close the door to the living room at night. My fiance is usualy he first up in the morning so is the one to open the living room door. She has also been complaining of headaches if she sits in the living room for long periods. (its not carbon monoxide as we have a tester for it and it hasnt shown us anything) So putting them together we came to the conclusion maybe its the slow leek that we cant smell as its not building up that's making her feel bad. So i figured i would call the gas people. Which i did. 0800 111 999 i think the number was. I was expecting with it being 9pm on Sunday and it not being an emergency someone would come out at the start of the week....

Boy i was wrong.

The gas guy turned up 20 mins later (very pissed off at being called out on Sunday at 9pm) couldn't find anything but could smell a whiff. So investigated further, nothing in my neighbors house's basements. He banged about outside and came back with a reading of 5 parts per million which is very small (you cant smell less than 500) But i know for a fact i've smelt it when working on the car.

Right now there is 2 gas vans outside hammering holes in the pavement at 11pm on a Sunday night! On most peoples roads this might be a bit of a pain in the bum. But i live on a terraced street with no front yard. Its literally house, pavement, road, pavement, house. Although the road is wide enough for cars on each side.

Am i the worst neighbor ever?

If there IS a leak, no matter how small, how long until it gets bigger and starts to cause problems? If you had suspicions, and peopel were becoming ill, then getting it checked out and put right is the best tihng to do. I'm sure the neighbours won't be too upset at work going on outside. Besides, how will they know it was you who caused it? And even if they DID know it was you, how do they know you don't have an urgent gas problem which needs sorting out ASAP?

I'm sure they'd do the same thing. They may moan, but who gives a sh!t?

We had a gas leak under our house and weren't even aware of it. We had smelled a whiff every now and then but couldn't put our finger on where it was coing from.

When they pulled my old drive up, the smell hit us straight away. We found the gas pipe had corroded away and left a 2 -3mm hole in the pipe.......

You did the right thing mate. You only needed to go away for a fortnight and you could have blown the house up switching the living room light on....;)

"Brian.... NO!!!" Anyone else remember that advert :D

Gas is dangerous as it is heavier than air so tends to puddle in low spots (like basements). All it tales is fo rthe mixture of gas to air to reach a lesn combustible mixture and then its a bomb waiting to go off!

You did the right thing :D

Working for British Gas, when I went through my training all those years ago we were told in the gas emergency training that it only takes 50p worth of gas to cause a gas explosion that can tear a house apart.

So you done the right thing in more ways than one mate.
