Glass or Plastic Headlamps???

Shovels

Recommended Posts

This question really coincides with Nic's post about a group headlamp buy. What's the difference/advantages/disadvantages between the glass and plastic headlamps? - apart from the obvious of one being glass and the other plastic!

BTW I want to put a HID kit in if that makes any difference.

plastic, goes yellow and all......... well, just horrible!

Glass, stays nice and clean!

Get glass, period!

Scotty

Unless you want facelift lights, which look much better IMHO and are only available in plastic. The facelift lights are dark grey inside rather than silver, have chrome rings around the lights and the sidelight is not part of the headlight unit (where is looks :limp: ), but integrated with the indicators.

I agree with Simon, I'd go face-lift as I think they look a lot better. Mine are now 5 years old and look like new, I'll take some photos tomorrow so you can see.

I also have the same HID kit that Terminator is doing on the group buy and the light quality is extremely good.

The main differences between the glass and face-lift:

The glass have the side light mounted inside the headlight (same as pre-facelift j-spec) The face-lift side light is in the same unit as front indicators. Glass have chrome inner, face-lift are mat black. Glass fit 9005/9006 bulbs, face-lift 9005J/9006J. The glass headlights are heavier.

Thanks Stevo for the info on sidelights.

Stab in the dark I know, but anyone got a pic of a white Sup with facelift lights on. Bit concerned that lights will look a bit odd, as they will contrast with the car being much darker than the glass and early j-spec lights.

Thanks guys. Photo's would be cool.

If I go for the face-lift lights does that mean I have to get facelift front indicators to include the side lights?

Here are some photos I have just taken of my front and rear lights, these are both 5 years old and there is no yellowing or scratches, they look as good as new.

The face-lift lights will look very  on a white Supra IMO.

Cheers Stevo, I will bookmark that one.

Having never taken the indicators off the bumper before, will those one's do a straight swop with my current ones...

How difficult is it to wire the side lights down to the new location?

so if that link works, and there you go but it might be worth while seeing where this massive group buy on lights is going first

I'm suspisious that these are not actual genuine Toyota lights, as they don't look right in the close up photo. I remember the rear of mine were black not chrome as shown in the photo. It is also odd that they come with 4 amber bulbs rather than 2 amber (indicators) and 2 white (side lights.) I have seen non-genuine versions of these lights being advertised elsewhere and the quality is not as good as the genuine Toyota lights.

The other problem with them is that they do not include the 2 wiring looms, these are needed if fitting the front indicators to a pre-face lift Supra.

Just to clarify the indicators/side lights in the group buy, are geniune Toyota parts, include all bulbs (2 x amber/2 x white) and 2 x wiring looms. Which I think are a better deal personally, when you factor in quality, extra postage, cost of white bulbs and wiring looms.

See my comments on other post about these cheap lights.

With the correct wiring looms (not included in the cheap lights above) the face lift side lights can easily be spliced into the wires that go to pre-facelift side lights.
