Brake Bleeding Help!!!!

Recommended Posts

I had my rear calipers off gave them a refurb and changed the discs while I was there .After fitting them on I bleeded the brakes as I have done my other sup's back first then front, still had a really spongy pedal and could not pump up the pressure after about a hour of bleeding and loads of fluid I have got nowhere, I have tried with the engine on and off no difference.

I made up in my mind it must be the master cylinder so I bought a new one from Toyota and fitted that re-bleeded same problem anyone got any ideas ?.

One thing to note when bleeding the front brakes when you open the bleed nipple the brake goes all the way to the floor, with the rears the brake peddle never goes all the way to the floor with the nipple open it goes quite far but just before the floor it goes hard is this right ?

Hi Chaz,

Necessary to make a lot of assumptions when answering your post.....normal bleed procedure is to start at the furthest away wheel to the master cyclinder then 2nd farthest, then 3rd etc..(taken from Toyota manual)

Best to do bleeding as two man job for best results; one at the driving seat pumping the pedal, the other at the wheel.

Driver pumps brake pedal about ten times fast and to the floor and on the last one holds the pedal down, do not lift up! Wheel man waits for the "last pedal-pump" and opens the nipple, allowing fluid out and then shutting it off before the pedal man releases the pedal.

Another "obvious" one is do not start the engine during this!.....all done with engine off.

Ive never yet found one of the "one-man brake bleeding kits" to really work well and the above is the old and very "tried & tested method".

Not sure if you can fit the calipers "the wrong way round"........not sure what this means.

I'll try and find the brake section in my manual and post it for you, otherwise try going to http://www.internetwork.org.uk/supra.htm there's a good set of manuals there, assuming the page is still accessible.

Tell us EXACTLY how you are doing the bleeding.

Firstly I tired the one man self kit , then I tried one person in the car and one doing the bleeding, starting from the back right to back left then front left to front right, I must have passed atleast 2 litres through the system doing it this way. Made no difference to the brake feel, it makes a wooosh sound as it goes down and goes hard about 1.5-2inches from the floor.

Thanks George I have done all of that , before I posted I went through everypost I could find about bleeding and problems etc and I think from what others have said I might have air in the abs unit trapped but thats where most of those old threads die.

Hi again Chaz,

Ive attached the brake section from the Supra Manual for you.....it has a split view of front, back and master cyclinder and also gives a recommended bleed procedure.

Ive also picked up references to the need to bleed a traction control system(if fitted) not sure exactly what/where the connections might be though, still looking at that one, and also farther down the attachment there is a reference to a proportioning valve for the back brakes.

Hope attached will help you.

Never work on brakes if you have no idea what you are doing (which it seems ya dont). After all its not that expensive to go to a local garage.

Glad its your car not mine mate!!!

That's a provocative first post from someone new, and also wholly unneccesary in this case as chaz has removed and refurbed the calipers himself successfully and is following the usual guide to bleeding brakes, then simply came on here for help because things weren't going to plan.

I suggest you tone down the holy knowitall attitude or find a different forum to troll.

OOO keep ya shirt on.

One thing I can tell you cos I am a mechanic is Brakes are not for the amature (ON ANY CAR) and it seems from the posts this person is. Now if you want to drive his car after he has done them you carry on but I won't.

It seems there are a lot of people on ere giving it a go and frankly I am becomming very concerned about driving out there knowing we have got High Performance cars like the Supe being modded and tampered with by !!! well you know what I mean.

A very Dangerouse game you are playing.

Hehehehe, I like you, you make me smile...

One thing to remember, is that there is also a LOT of people on here, ranging from purely drivers to DIYers to race engine builders... so get to know a few of them first before making such a sweeping statement, you may be shocked at how quickly they learn :)

Can't see you doing too well on this forum with an attitude like that! Try getting a feel for the place first before you start insulting people.

I have to say that if this is the type of people you are on ere, god help us. If you all think it is OK to mess about with brakes on a car like a supe you are all insane and frankly would not like to be a member of such a bunch of lunatics.

Remember this, would you like to buy a Ferrari from a guy who has just been pratting around with the brakes on it. MMMM I would think the answer to that would be NO.

Also who is gonna tell the mother of the kid that has just been killed trying to cross the road cos some guy had been trying a bit of DIY on his car and just when he needed to brake hard the brake line broke cos he did not know what he was doing a couple of days before while messing around with them.

I think if you threw this open to a proper debate, obvously not on this forum though as you all seem biased, you would be shot down for this not praised. I just hope my kids are not walking the streets when you lot are about.

Insane you are all insane. I love a good argument but when it comes to common sense

You're trolling, scaremongering, pretending to act all high and mighty, and for all we know a 12 year old child sat at mummy's computer. Your posturing has no effect on us and no-one is impressed, we've seen it all before.

I'm not even going to start refuting (easily) every single thing you've said as it's a waste of my time and it'd only feed your ego and provoke similar ill-thought-out illogical blinkered look-at-me posts.

One more troll post like this and you're out of tech and into off topic - where you can get torn a new one by people who enjoy that sort of thing.

Or you could play nice and open your mind..? Read some stuff on here before blazing away..? Any chance of that? :search:

Anyway mr acid, who says "proper garages" and so called "mechanics" are any better than an enthusiast with half an ounce of common sense at working on cars, the main reason i and alot of other people on here do most of the work on their own cars is because they`ve had bad experiences with so called qualified persons/garages, not doing a proper job and getting ripped off in the process, please close the door on your way out.

Mr Acid you come over as a bit of a c*ck, you may know about brakes but I bet you have few friends. Best to get a feel for the forum before you make wiseass statements. Oh and welcome to the site :)

Please don't feed the troll.

I'm leaving this thread intact for now but any more bilge and I'll hive off the rubbish to off topic and you can play with him in there :)
