Great. More media prophecies!

When will those that work in the media realise that they're actions that sell newspapers today ruin a country tomorrow?

Yes, I agree BUT this is a report that is somewhat backed up by Darling, even if he does not come out and say it (they never tell the truth anyway) the predictions he made for growth etc are well out of synch and all the indicators are there for this report to have a good foundation.

"The Chancellor used a speech to prepare the ground for slashing growth forecasts that now appear wildly optimistic.

In November, he had predicted that the economy would shrink by about 1 per cent this year, before growing by about 1.75 per cent in 2010.

He is expected to tear up those predictions in next month's Budget. "

I believe the media can increase the effect of something positively or negatively but they are rarely the cause of it........

ie you could argue the constant sensationalist and doom and gloom reporting at present may depress things/confidence further or cause a slightly deeper recession but there is no way you can blame the media for the start of all this mess, can you?

If you are in a good job with a good salary the credit crunch brings all kinds of opportunities and deals, the media only focus on the doom and gloom and therefore contribute to the problem by reducing confidence in the public, who in turn spend less

Its a good time to be in the buyers market right now, think long term, it will come back one day :)

It is bad though, last november we had a 10 year word of mouth job security as we where set to make profit, 4 months later 50% of the staff made redundant to cut costs. the house prices only really affect first time buyers as its harder to get on the ladder but if you have the cash its easy to buy one for cheap. if your already on the ladder it sounds bad but it doesnt really matter, you can have a 90,000 house worth 60,000 but just move out into another 60,000 house which obviously will be exactly the same. house prices will always go up and down and its not a major deal really. the worst part of the country at the moment is the lack of jobs or oppotunities for people thats costing us. technology has cut so many jobs as they do it for you, internet stores are closing down high street stores by cutting the cost of going in store. to be honest we invent things and we all contribute to our own demise im afraid.

The media were talking about Northern Rock and associated them as in the same league as Bradford & Bingley. THe next day people were queueing outside B&B to make withdrawals despite the fact that Bradford & Bingley had had no financial problems prior to this. So in short I would argue that yes you could to a large degree.

I believe it was also the media that sank Enron a few years ago. They had more than enough money to fix the prolems they had but the mass hysteria caused by sensationalism created a mass exodus of financial support.

If you live in a home this is not an issue. If you live in an investment then it is a problem. A lot of greedy people have conned many into thinking about houses in the wrong way.

We will shortly be hearing from those who will endeavour to gain from the misery of the misguided and tell us all how they will snap up loads of cheap properties and amass a portfolio which they expect will increase in value and then ultimately sell on for a profit.

I wonder if we will hear of anyone (private or financial mortgage/landlord) helping out some unfortunate family by giving them a rent or mortgage holiday so they can stay in their home.

Someone find the story about how many of us where going to die from BSE.

Radio 1's 'News Beat' is my favourite for the usual 'we're all going to die/be skint story'... that womans patronising voice, handing out half truths in a bid to rile already disgruntled teenagers... really annoys me.

Me too! I like some of the stuff on Radio 1, but their news stories really are dumbed down and designed to scare-monger. Same goes for most tabloid newspapers. For those people who think estate agents or lawyers are the lowest of the low, well I guess they're never met a tabloid journalist.

......just like the media sank Nixon?

They expose fraud, you can't then blame investors for removing their money, if its your perception the media are to blame then thats your perspective, mine is that the fraudsters sank Enron and Nixon sank himself.........

Is it really a buyers Market? Im tearing my hair out this end, buy or not to buy :(

Not yet. Fools rush in... Have patience, housing stock is still massively overpriced, hence the apparently 'scary' drops being speculated by the media (now) and me (nearly a year ago). They're not scary, people lose sight of what was normal and thought prices would go skywards forever... boom & bust is resultant from basic human nature. As a consequence we've had a peak, and now we're heading for the trough. Watch house prices drop below the long term average of 3.5x average salary and watch recession push it further still, then buy.

I said this stuff ages ago. 1 2 -->3.

Anyway, the media don't cause bank problems, recessions etc. Look deeper and you'll see there were fundamental issues in the institutions that failed, the media just brought them to more people's attentions - but ultimately they were doomed sooner or later anyway, and better it be sooner than cause and EVEN BIGGER mess.
