martin1982
OK so she's decided she wants something a bit nice n sporty so I recommended her looking at MR2's and Celica's Now she's determined she wants this car... http://pistonheads.com/sales/935583.htm I saw the mileage and told her to leave it, but, she's being stubborn she's determined that she wants it! Anyone have any experience or knowledge of buying a high mileage car?
Mike
It depends how well it's been looked after, which is obviously a bit of a gamble in the 'used car' world. I'd look for something with 60k or under if I were you.
dibbleyuk
I never worry about the mileage on cars if they have plenty of service history i wouldnt worry. I brought my astravan with 144000 on the clock and its in lovely condition and drives nice i dont have any problems. I have a friend that wouldnt buy anything with over 60k on it! He will pay so much more for a car with low mileage when he can get the same car for alot less if he got one that had done maybe 20-30k more. Just my opinion. grahamc
generally speaking the toyota engines, especially the vvti ones are very good, have friends with different models, etc and have no issues... Always liked the look of this car!
Jurgen-Jm-Imports
Them toyota engines are pretty bullet proof.. What you need to check is the abuse to the car that might have worn other components.. Clutch brakes suspension gearbox if it looks well cared for dont let milege put you off
martin1982
Yeah, my initial reaction was, "prob gonna cost you a fortune at the next service when you need new brakes and a clutch". Might take a look at it with the "I'm determined to find something wrong with this car" frame of mind, helped me pass on buying some dodgy looking Supras! Then if I'm really nit picking to find faults, chances are it should be a good 'un. Only thing is she's thinking of taking out a loan to buy it. Again, not something I think is a wise decision! kslb
I test drove one of these when they came out and wasn't impressed but I would not let mileage put you off my fathers supra is showing 238,000 on the clock and doesn't miss a beat and is very reliable. merckx
The mileage can be a problem if you want to sell it, personally I wouldn't get that sort of car with a high mileage.
adnanshah247
ask her what will you get in return if you buy her the car, if she goes quite then no more hassle!!! if she doesnt then go get the damn thing!
SimonT
Yeah i agree with the fact that selling it on may be a problem but depends how many miles she is going to be doing in it as it may have over 150,000 by the time she comes to sell it and then it will be worth peanuts! supra-lover
I love these cars, my friend has one I really like it.
grahamc
also keep in mind that if the brakes or clutch are going, its a bargaining point!
martin1982
Ok darling creatures that women are etc She has now changed her mind and wants this http://pistonheads.com/sales/934592.htm I like it, looks tidy and I'm a big fan of MR2's. Here's the catch... the car is in Italy. Onwer says she will pay for it to be shipped back to UK once it is sold and is looking for a quick sale. GF can't get to Italy to see it but is determined to buy it. Personally I would never ever buy a car w/out going to see it first. Trying to think of options to do some bargaining here, best I can think of off hand is "OK We'll take it but it has to have a full Toyota Service and MOT - current MOT expires in October - when it arrives back in the UK. TRD DAN
be very carefull with these engines as they are prone to burning oil , i work for toyota and have done quite a few engines in mr2's , celicas, and avensis they do have an extended warrenty with toyota as long as there is a full service history and the mileage is under 80 k i believe
martin1982
It's ok, I'm not paying for it! Here's the convo via e mail between them (obviously it starts at the bottom: "Hi Barker , The car has valid MOT and road tax until 10.2009. I can use a specialized car shipping company who will provide you a tracking number( to verify online the shipment status) and also a 48hrs inspection period and the right to decline the car is it doesn`t satisfy your needs 100%.The delivery will take max 5-6 days. I`ve used this company when I have purchased my 2006 BMW X5 from Germany and I was very satisfied with their services. They acted very proffesional and at very affordable costs The company works like a COD company, they will only require a proof from you that you have the cash available and you have a valid address before they will start the delivery. The car will be delivered at your home address by truck,it will come with all documents signed by me so you can easily transfer on to your name.all service records,V5 doc and log book will be present and carefully verified. If you agree on the terms and you are sure about the purchase please let me know your full name and address for the delivery and I will inform you with all the details as soon as I have arranged the shipment. I am sure you will simply love the car and there won`t be any problems with the sale. I look forward to your reply Regards Eliada --- On Wed, 3/11/09, loz barker wrote: From: loz barker Subject: RE: 'Toyota MR2' at PistonHeads.com To: [email protected] Date: Wednesday, March 11, 2009, 3:46 PM Thank you so much for your fast response. Is it taxed/mot'd at all? That's very generous of you saying you will ship it, when I received your next mail back I will make my decision. Thank you very much! Engine Size: 1,798 cc . Power: 138 I have worked in UK for the last 1 year and I've purchased the car there. My company wanted me back home, so currently I'm in Milan,Italy and the car is currently here with me.I can`t use it here because it has the wheel on the wright side and it would also cost me too much to register here in Italy. It is still registered in the UK and since I have absolutely no use for it I am looking for a fast sale( this is why the low asking price) I can ship the car from here directly to your home address and I am also willing to cover all delivery expenses. What litre engine is this? I am very interested in this car, if I decide I want to buy it are you able to meet half way as I live in Peterborough? Thanks" My initial reaction was that it was some kind of scam, just tyring to figure out how exactly the "seller" would make some money out of it... BTW Thanks all for you opinions/advice so far!
