eyefi
is there anything on the stock 6 speed worth upgrading, clutch, shifter, anything? it will b handling 400 - 450 flyhp, assume bits need replacing anyway. ta
Guest Martin F
The stock setup (box & clutch) should be able to handle that sort of power just fine. You may want to consider a mildly uprated clutch, like an RPS Stage 2, if and when your current clutch does give up the ghost.
Nic
I went through a standard Toyota clutch in less than 20,000km, running 1.2bar, a lot of this was was city driving though. I've just had a TRD twin plate clutch fitted which initially felt heavy and was very on/off. As I've done a few miles with it I have got used to the feel and you can really feel it handle the power well. One thing you will notice with an uprated clutch and lightened flywheel is that it sounds very rattly at ticking over, oh and hill starts can be fun:eek:
randy
Yeah Mate! Clutch is a good upgrade also a C's short shifter if you want really short throws. But I burnt my clutch in about 1month after I went BPU. I got a TRD clutch too Its superb a little heaver clutch pressure but it grips like hell. Also It has that on/off feel cause its a quick release clutch and rattles after it gets a little hot at idle.
Paul Whiffin
TRD clutch is the same as an RPS one apparently but more expensive because of the name....
Alex
PHR do an upgrade to the actual gearbox I believe... Ring and Pinion set which reduce the ratio's to give better acceleration...i think

Syed Shah
It changes it from the US spec 3.13 to the j-spec 3.27 so it is preety pointless doing this to a j-spec 6-speed as there is no difference. Could be done on a UK spec though.
eyefi
syed, where d u get these numbers from?
paulrenn
I'd be tempted to keep the stock Toyota clutch to be honest. A little bit of slip is good for keeping your drivetrain in good condition...a harsh clutch could break your gearbox/driveshaft etc if you dump the clutch with a major amount of power...for example when drag racing...and stock Toyota performance clutches are usually pretty good. The only upgrade I'd really consider for clutch would be a Helix one from Fensport, but dunno if they have a Supra application. Just IMHO... Just while reading through http://www.mkiv.com This means that while the j-spec can do 196mph, the UK spec can hit 205mph

I don't know whether this theory really applies to the Supra with it's dual mass flywheel assembly. This is exactly the reason that they put the dual mass flywheel in place, to reduce the shock to the drivetrain when you do release the clutch. Adam W
You'll only mince the transmission if you fit a total "overkill" clutch. The important thing is to get one with a sprung hub - this means that as the driven plate bites onto the flywheel, there are circumferential springs which let it rotate slightly independantly of it's hub, hence reducing the shock to the gearbox input shaft. The hub (which is directly connected to the gearbox) gets a moment to "catch up" to the speed of flywheel as the springs compress. Hard to explain in words but if you saw a picture of one you'd understand! Steer clear of race spec stuff like (for example) the Clutchmasters Stage IV clutch, four paddle brass button unsprung driven plate = ouch. Unless you have a race spec gearbox, propshaft, diff, and driveshafts of course!
eyefi
heres a selection of the cheaper end of rps's clutch selection (taken from their web site):- model.....part#.....list price $.....torque cap.....pressure incr SPORT SERIES street disc 93+.....SS-22170-ST.....$549.00.....525.....10% solid hub puck 93+.....SS-22170-SH.....$589.00.....600.....10% sprung hub puck 93+.....SS-22170-SP.....$595.00.....600.....10% MAX SERIES street disc 93+.....MS-22170-ST.....$687.00.....660.....38% solid hub puck 93+.....MS-22170-SH.....$707.00.....825.....38% sprung hub puck 93+.....MS-22170-SP.....$747.00.....825.....38% is the torque capability figure the amount of torque it would take to slip the closed clutch? if so would i see any real benefit from anything other than a street disc, considering my engine torque is not gonna b above 525lb/ft? and am i correct in thinking that the max series street disc is just gonna give me a heavier clutch? how long do these clutches last? standard fast road use, the odd high rpm launch etc sorry for all the questions, im new to performance transmissions. ta
WRC-Biturbo
Hello 400 to 450Ps on flywheel is too much for org. Clutch my car have 443Ps / 629NM on the Flywheel and the new org. Clutch where brocken after 3000KM at the time i built in a Qs- Giken Triple Clutch including Flywheel the weight is loosing 17 Kg to org. Clutch & Flywheel. The clutch is loud and not easy to handle but there can do 1000 RWHP and many torque. In future i make a turbo upgrade so i do one of the best clutch´s on the market. here some pictures from the clutch: http://supras.bei.t-online.de/Kupplung%20neu.jpg http://supras.bei.t-online.de/Kupplung/scheibe%2011.JPG here a picture of the dynorun please forgive my bad englisch http://supras.bei.t-online.de/Pr%fcfstand.jpg please forgive my bad englisch best regards Thomas
