Bit of a random one this,...

Early stages here, but I just couldn't sit at home and do nothing, so i thought who better to ask than you lot. :p

I've just been to see a very impressive recording session (low tec university equipment.) and a very enjoyable evening talking to the young lady afterwards. She has a great passion for music and sounds very similar to Dido in style, also very powerful (great range) but she has no knowledge or contacts to develop her voice and music career. Shes played in small groups, done open mic sessions and karaoke everywhere but I'd just love a talent scout , or someone with the contacts to hear her.

So my questions is, Not immediately but after a few more sessions ect., how best can I help promote this talent.

Shes written off for auditions to X-factor etc etc,.... but to be honest I think shes above all those amateurs.

Oh, btw: She writes her own music, plays guitar, keyboard and drums too Trust me, this girls bag of talent is pretty darn deep.

Any ideas, suggestions or recommendations are truly welcome.

Simon Cowell and Lous Walshes mobile numbers would be great :D

Thanks!

She has a FB page and I've already advised her to build a website dedicated to her music but I didn't think of MySpace, That a great idea Mike. Thank you.

I have a CD but the files are WMV and sound pretty rubbish, pluss a guy in the background with bongo Drums wanted shooting as he kept free styling all over her vocals.

Hah hah, Mike.

Just doing my bit for the kids of tomorrow (hopefully my kids).

I know a young lady with a lot of talent..... ;)

Anyway, back to the OP's question..... A recording session with a small label, self promoted is a great idea.

I know one person that does this, I have his number... facebook etc and he's damn good. He sells his albums online and via his website. PM me if you need more info.

OK, where do I begin?

When you say promote her talents, do you mean simply her singing ability, or her songwriting skills, or her singer-songwriter ability?

Do not get her to do X faxtor- unless she would like a career that even if she won, probably wouldn't even last 5 minutes.

And destroy any credible potential in the biz.

If I was her, I'd avoid record companies right now. Don't do the scattergun approach- most record companies do not accept unsolicited mail- ie piles of unrequested demos simply going in their bin.

She needs to start doing some acoustic gigs, so research London acoutic gigs ie The Bedford Pub, very well known place. Bloke called Tony Moore runs it.

Maybe invite some music publishers down- when she's got a decent set worked out.

Also consider music lawyers- they can be your friend and bridge the gap to publishers and record labels.

Above all she need a genuine desire herself to achieve these things- if she's not too fussed- you are wasting yourtime.

Finally, if I was starting out (again)...Yes do a myspace page, do the facebook thing, do some gigs, do some more, get better, invite publisher, lawyers down (and I don't mean to the Dog & Duck in Basildon) and get some young computer/website geek to build a great site, with e-commerce stuff and do it yourselve..promotion of gigs and on-line sales od her mp3s

After all, a record company is only a bank, who lend you money to record stuff and then market it and then they take it all back off you....and then some.

F*ck them.

DIY ftw :D

Good luck with it sir :)

Is she as good as Emily Peasgood?

WOW! Great advice and some very useful information.

thanks mate.

singer-songwriter ability really, her voice is most impressive.

Having spoken to her, she is keen and agreed with the Myspace site, she's handy with website design so could do that herself with help from me.

I agree with the X-factor commit, Its a bit of a gimmick and the only people who succeed are under dogs and freaks.

Shes doing a few acoustic gigs ATM, but all local so we can work on that.

I thing the best approach is practice practice practice and then book a studio session with some proper recording equipment.

Thanks for the advice. I'll pass it on. :)

Nice one. :) Totally agree with everything said. It is unfortunate that decent talent needs to be spotted. That's just the way it is. You're suggestions are great. :)

Ed, if she has a reasonable quality vocal recording and some guitar parts ect, I could throw a polished track together? I've got all the gubbins here to put proffesional mixes together (and a few contacts) ;)

Fantastic matey.

Thats another great possibility and I appreciate it.

I'm seeing her again tomorrow night in a jaz bar

(*FastShow* niiiiiiice )

so I'll see what she thinks. Realistically she'll probably want to put in more practice time and decide which songs she want to develop first. Thanks again everyone

Jezz, do you have a studio? Both of my bands are looking to do some recording over the next few months....

Cheers mate.

Unlucky! Just goes to show, just because you win and get the votes doesn't guarantee anything.

Funnily enough I was discussing the pros and cons of these 'talent shows' with her last night. Her view was, to get noticed by such important figures in the music industry mentors, dance choreographers and vocal coaches out ways any negative attributes.

I personally have my doubts.

She may care to realise that in the real world "mentors" do not exist- they are merely a TV concept.

Dance choreographers are irrelevent- if you're a singer-songwriter.

And vocal coaches would simply charge for their time.

Don't think I've forgoten anything :D

I bow down to your superior knowledge sir, and to be honest I tend to agree, but she said the voice coaches and contacts alone was good enough reason to apply.

I'm assuming you dont actually pay for the advice and help from the mentors as thats part of the show - Is the right?

she dances too.

Tap, modern, salsa, bedroom blah blah blah..

oh yes, we're not talking about Raquel Waller here.

:p
