Chris Wilson
Owner says yes, with a struggle, I say no way... Will need gates widening. Can go from current 12 foot to 24 foot with a commensurate increase in the width of the "funnel" bit. I intend to reverse the thing in. Vehicle is a Merc 1831S tractor unit converted to a rigid box, overall vehicle length just a tad under 40 foot. The opposite side of the road has a ditch, but I reckon the cab would be in the trees before a front wheel went in... http://www.gatesgarth.com/gates/gates.html

michael
It'll go in, the question is what it will take with it
Ian Ian
It will fit Chris ..it will be easier to reverse it in too, if you drive it up your road from the main road with your house on the left, if you get what i mean the angle of your drive will help it go in Cheers -Ian-
Guigsy
i have no idea but ill happily come over and wave you back while it runs over whatever it demolishes then you can blame me. That way you wont get grief from the wife
Chris Wilson
Thanks chaps. Hopefully the current owner will show what's possible, or not, later this week, and I can decide if it's a none starter, or if the gates needs widening to make it relatively easy. Some say an artic is easier to get into narrow'ish entrances, but their running costs are probably a lot higher? What i don't want is a set up where entrance and egress is such a PITA that you dread it. The storage a big box gives, plus the means of taking a saloon somewhere without the worry of sitting in some God forsaken hole for hours while a recovery vehicle arrives and has your trousers down for fetching you back home also has a certain appeal An artic would probably be cheaper to buy cubic foot wise, but taking my test for this sort of beastie is daunting enough, at my stage of life! I have horrific memorys of `er indoors and I having HUGE domestics about attempts to back things into tight places, with her totally out of sight, calling weakly that I'd just sliced a lump out of the side of something, and that I MUST have seen her waving frantically.... I may take you up on this

extendor
with her totally out of sight, calling weakly that I'd just sliced a lump out of the side of something, and that I MUST have seen her waving frantically:) Deja vu mate. Have been here, done that and got the burst ear drums for it. It happens to me when launching the boat down the slipway.

colsoop
That looks ok albeit very tight width wise. Approach the house with the gate on your left and take it close to the farmers gate on the opposite of the road and then reverse it in. SteveR
Will dig holes/wheelbarrow hard core around in exhanfge for a guided tour round the Wilson animal sanctury and working race car museum! I'm sure others would too, let me know if you want to try and drum up some interest...
standardsupra20
I'd say try it, thats the only way you'll know for sure. I drove 40 ft rigids & artics for years on removals & to be honest most of the time an artic can be easier to get into driveways. If she don't go in backwards then try driving from the opp side of the road slightly past the driveway entrance then reverse & shunt until you can hook the front end into the driveway. This sometimes works as you can hang the arse end over the ditch & push it into the trees giving you a couple of valuable feet. If you do drive in get some thick ply to put over the grass so you can drive accross it without getting stuck thus allowing the rear axle to pass the gate post. Pete
I'd say it'll be damn tight. You didn't like those trees much anyway did you?
Chris Wilson
It may become clear tomorrow, if he can get it over, it's not taxed, so I need to take my trade plates over there. i have also found out my Volvo has had no MOT since early January, so that needs sorting tomorrow night. If I really want to have this thing I might have to chop the lower branches off the Leylandii type things by the gates and move the fence and gateposts to get a much wider gateway, TBH it would be better for the 7.5 tonner, as that's a PITA when you do it on your own. `Er indoors is quite calm about it all, but I have had to buy her a new car, so harmony has its price
Chris Wilson
He got it in the drive and round the back in one go, no issues, very professional! Coming out he stopped, I thought to have a second bite, then he went again and took a slice out of the side of the truck, and a locker, plus did a whoopsie to the gate lantern The thing has a very big overhand behind the back axle. It WAS very tight, definitely a widen the gates jobbie. Still the Skyline went in no worries with room for 3 more cars, so I gain a 4 car garage in the deal, if I go ahead. I was amazed it went in in one go, or even at all. Quite rapid up to 56 MPH, too. http://www.gatesgarth.com/truck/truck.html
