Ace
I have been toying with the idea of picking up a MkII MR2 (probably a turbo Rev2 or Rev3) as a daily driver - the one in the link below caught my eye (even if it IS described as a 2001 model, which it clearly isn't). http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/TOYOTA+MR2/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-18-240-4294965772-4294967173/advert.action?R=200909329568291&distance=53&postcode=da8+3bu&channel=CARS&make=TOYOTA&model=MR2&min_pr=&max_pr=4000&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2001&vehicleRegLetter= Price looks good, and it seems a very tidy example. Anyone got any opinions on these, or have owned one? Would be nice to have a "convertible" turbocharged car for under three grand, but it's money poorly spent if I'm spending just as much again due to poor build quality, repairs, etc.
jevansio
On my 4th one now, I bought one for that exact reason, a runaround while the Supe was away for the winter. It's a UK spec so non-turbo, it's rather lack luster compared to my previous cars, but is a great little runner that I can take anywhere without fear (unlike my other cars). Swampy442
Also ex owner of a rev 3 na. Great gearchange, tight if sometimes difficult handling, plasticky interior. Be prepared for lots of intrusive engine noise though, they aint the quietest car lol. Everyone i know (and I know a few) who owned T tops, they all leaked so Id avoid that personally. But theyre great fun and usual Toyota reliabillity.
dr_blackman
I bought my 93 MR2 na Uk spec after selling my Supra and only use it on the weekends and its great fun I'm doing a few track days this year in mine as I think they are a hoot to drive My advise is to go look at a few/ drive a few 1st as these cars are getting old now and there are a lot of dogs about. I looked for a few months before buying mine and I was lucky to find such a mint example which had full toyota service history and only 55k and i'm its 3rd owner now

Soaruss
I had a UK N/A T bar, till i had a Turbo transplant, really nice car to drive, never had any probs with mine apart from droplinks which are a common failure on the MR2. T tops never leaked on mine (must have picked a good one). Longest I'v kept a car too. Heres a pic of my old one which was taken by Michael. Ace
Thanks for all the input. So the general consensus is that, as with all other cars of this nature, it is fine as long as it is thoroughly checked and doesn't turn out to be a total shed. I thought as much Have any of you looked at the link in my original post? To the naked eye that example looks fine, obviously an inspection in person will confirm or dispute that. Is 2800 quid about par for the course / over the top / bargain?
jevansio
Looks very clean, only a final test drive would confirm if it pulled as normal, drove well etc
Guest dangerousandy
I had a Rev 1 UK-spec T-Bar and I loved it! It had done 204000 miles when I bought it and it was still as tight as one with 20k on the clock!

johnny g
This is mine, just in the process of having a wide arch kit fitted I've got my Supe - and I really don't know if I'll ever get the love back for the MR2 that I have for the Supra now. Ace
I've got my Supe - and I really don't know if I'll ever get the love back for the MR2 that I have for the Supra now. I think I'd feel the same once I got my grubby paws on a Supra, but with the economy forcing everyone to tighten belts, an MR2 such as this might be a worthwhile stopgap, certainly when they are cheaper than Supras overall. A lot of people here seem to have, or have had, an MR2 as a "stepping stone" on their way to the Supra, so that has pretty much solidified my opinion on them. Now to go and buy the right one.
