Lower pulley nut seized on

Just had the motor back from Toyota, where it had been for the regular service. This time I had asked for a cam belt change too.

Service all went swimmingly, but when they came to remove the lower pulley, they couldn't. Apparently it was stuck on solid. They tried the usual array of long bars etc, heating it up etc. But all to no avail. They eventually gave up after a few hours of trying.

Speaking with the mechanics, they said they have encountered it before on J Spec cars, but never on UK cars, strange or what!

Anyway, the question is, anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you get around it?

Cheers,

nigel

Muppetts! Can't believe they use the excuse that it only happens on J specs! Also hope they didn't put to much heat down there or your harmonic balancer will be fecked.

Mine was very tight but came of with the help of the starter trick. Good airgun and SST should shift it.

My mate is one of the mechanics there, so he kept an eye out for me!

They tried both a half inch and a 1 inch airgun, and something he also described as a "starter trick". All got us nowhere! :violin:

when i done mine i removed both the coolant rad and aircon one. to allow me to get a huge airgun designed for lorrys in there. come of like it was finger tight :D

You MUST renew the damper now it's been got hot. It may fail spectacularly. The bolt will come undone...

There are quite a few threads on here which desribe the results of some idiot applying heat to get this off. A main dealer applying heat just proves they have not got a clue about these cars. FGS Toyota make their own SST for holding the pulley!!!!!!!!.

Just to re-iterate what everyone else has said, you MUST get the pulley and front crank seal changed, and I'd be out for blood at the Toyota dealership if I were you.

Like Termy says, where the hell was the Special Service Tool? They tried the starter trick? FFS!

I've had two timing belt changes done now. I always put a note on my steering wheel specifying NO HEAT to be used when removing the pulley.

Hope you get it sorted.

Checked with my mate at Toyota, they used the special tool to no avail, did not apply heat long enough to damage the damper, and even tried cranking the engine toloosen the bolt allto no avail.

Any ideas anyone?

Anyone suggest a good place for cambelt change in the South East (Essex), and what sort of prices should I be looking to pay?

Oh - and the UK versus J-Spec thing has got to be bollocks too. The part numbers for the bolts are the same: 90119-18002

If you get them to chenge the pulley, I'd get them to change the bolt too in case the heat has weakened it.

Yeah, I think the UK vs Jspec was just a throw away line. I assume they haven't seen many Jspecs and just found tmy one to be a little tight.

When I get it done, I'llchange the lot, just not with Toyota!

Dude they are feeding you a crock of shit , what did they do put the flame near the nut to try and frighten it !!!!! :eyebrows: :eyebrows:

If they had used the tool then they would have got the nut off period .

i made my own tool as i had access to a machine shop at the time, it was hard enough with the tool and it sounds like they aint got one, the nut is tight (400 nm i think) but any decent garage with the right gear would be able to get it off, if all else fails there is a guy on the board who rents the tool, get it off him and get a reputable garage to do it cos it sounds like your toyo garage are muppets or they cant be arsed
