Andrew Dunk Shaw
Hi guys, When starting my uk mkiv tt from cold, having been parked up overnite on drive, ive spotted a small amount of blue/grey smoke out of exhaust, this clears within a couple of seconds and does not occur again until the cars been parked up overnite. Even after the cars been parked up for over 4 hrs in pub no sign of smoke. No signs of it whilst driving, either going for it or tootling along, (had a m8 follow me to check this) Is this possibly valve guild seals or something worse beginning to happen ? Any advice or comments would be appreciated. Regards Andrew(dunk)Shaw Black uk mkiv tt
Andrew Dunk Shaw
Forgot to mention that its done 87,000 miles FSH and is running on MOBIL 1. Regards Andrew(dunk)Shaw Black uk mkiv tt
Branners
hmm, mobil1....Might be a little too thin on an 80,000 mile engine. What W is the Mobil1 that you use? It could be it is just seeping past the seals slightly where a thicker oil may not. JB
Andrew Dunk Shaw
Cheers John, I suppose it could be that, your right Mobil 1 is very thin, not sure what the W rating is but i'll find out off my m8 who gets it for me. The wierd thing is it doesnt smoke at any other time other than when cold starting after being parked up overnite. Branners
I could be wrong on this, but when the oil is hot its thinner, so when you stop the car it seeps past the rings and seals and sits in the piston. You then start up and by then the oil is cold and thicker so it doesnt come past the seals but the stuff in the piston burns off, as the engine gets hotter everything expands and so the thin oil cant seep past. Thats my take on things anyway... I used Shell Helix on my mkiii and it blew straight past the seals, changed to Magnatec and never had a problem with losing oil, the mkiii is still running, never had a BHG or any other problems so it appears some oils are just too thin. Andrew Dunk Shaw
Great minds think alike eh John Thats along the lines of what i was thinking, (honest:rolleyes:) Im now thinking of changing the oil and filter and swapping to a differant oil. My only worry is a few people say to always run the same oil, which is why i use Mobil 1 as the cars always run on it !!! Can you recomend a differant oil that wont cause any probs as there will still be quite a bit of Mobil 1 left coated round the engine even after draining. Dont really want to use an engine flush, think they can do more harm than good. Regards Andrew(dunk)Shaw Black uk mkiv tt
Branners
I think so long as you stay with fully synthetic then you can use different oils without any problems. If you go fron synth to mineral then it all sludges up and its game over.... Leon uses Valvoline in my Supra all the time, and I know quite a few others use it. My Supra is 113,000 miles and if left standing for a couple of weeks puffs a bit on startup, but generally has no smoking problems at all. Its cheaper than Mobil1 as well. You might want to pop down and see Leons new workshop in west Milton Keynes and pick some up then. You can call him on 01908 367100. Andrew Dunk Shaw
Im going to Paul Whiffins tomorrow to pick up my new wheels (Enfield) so i'll give Leon a call and pop in and see him on the way back up the M1. Thanks for your input John, think i'll try the Valvoline oil then, and if that doesn't wrk then me thinks its head off time and new valve guide seals. ( and at same time HKS cams, pulleys and cam belt ) Regards Andrew(dunk)Shaw Black uk mkiv tt
eyefi
welcome to the club andy, mines a low 70k miler and gives a quick puff off smoke (just for a couple of seconds) on a morning, it also does it if i blip the throttle after its been idling a while, not a lot of smoke just enough to be annoying. mines getting sorted this winter. Andrew Dunk Shaw
Hi Eyefi, Just got back from picking up my new wheels from Paul Whiffin, ooh they look the dogs b*****ks. Popped into Leon's workshop in Milton Keynes on the way home and had a good chat with him, and like JB reckons its worth a try using the Valvoline Synthetic oil. So im going to change oil and filter early next week and see if its any better. If not its back to Leon and he can take the head off and see whats what. Thanks for the welcome to the smokers club but forgive me as i dont intend being a member for long. Barry
The 'thickness' of the oil is determined by the first part of the number, ie: 15W40. The 15W part. Just dont put any 0W oil in, its too thin for turbo'd cars and you'll find it gets past the oil seals in the turbo.
Andrew Dunk Shaw
Hi Barry, Ive found out that the Mobil 1 ive been using is 0-40 which is bloody thin, so im swapping to the Valvoline Synthetic which is a thicker oil. So when its in i'll let you guys know whether it does the trick or not !!!!!! Regards Andrew(dunk)Shaw Black uk mkiv tt
