michael
http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-usf1-press-conference-video-highlights/ Leaf springs and cowboy hats for the drivers? Team website: http://www.usf1.com (broken at time of writing) There are already rumours of Danica Patrick being in the team but Reuters seem to think it's more of a PR stunt: http://blogs.reuters.com/sport/2009/02/20/danica-patrick-may-have-to-wait-for-formula-one-bow/
grahamc
Interesting.... but F1 is about manufacturers, not countries. Trust the US to get it wrong
Alex
Been hearing about this for a few weeks...they are mad if they think Danica can drive in F1 and that's not a sexist comment, just pure skill based, there are better drivers in the US. However if she was just a tester she'd boost the profile of the team. She's a marketing dream...but not an elite racer. As for USF1..it is indeed bonkers to go all patriotic, when they have said they'll source an engine from one of the other manufacturers like BMW, Merc, Ferrari (under the guise of helping their marketing in the US)...but that just makes a mockery of the US thing... A1GP is where teams race for country's...maybe it would be better there.... Having said that, cars on the grid is what I want to see, of we get more teams thanks to the cost cutting (Honda + Super Aguri's spaces on the grid will still be free even if USF1 does join) I'll be pleased...I want to see the maximum number of cars out there and competing. johnny g
It'd be nice to see a true US team in F1 - car built out there, with an American designed and built engine. But is it feasible in the current climate? I think not. GM are in trouble, same with Chrysler/Dodge and some others. The engine, as Alex said, would probably have to be Euro-sourced. Chassis wise, somebody like Lola/Penske/Reynard, who have big links to the ChampCar/IRL series out there would have a big input I'm guessing? As for the engine, if GM/Dodge couldn't build one - then I think they'd approach Toyota for one, simply because Toyota is huge in the states and it'd be a marketing dream to have an USF1 car, with a Toyota engine and Danica driving it. Who do you seriously think they'd approach as a driver? The youngest Andretti (Marco?) possibly.... Who knows...

They've sent a letter to every engine manufacturer in F1* asking them for their interest/offers for supply. *probably inc Cosworth who won the standard engine tender from the FIA - and would be the most logical partner if they don't get BMW who don't supply anyone at the moment. Scott Speed is the most logical driver, he's at least driven a V8 powered F1 car. Marco would be good for PR, no idea if he's good enough...the "best" driver in the US though is probably Jimmie Johnson - however the move from Nascar to F1 would be tough. Thorin
More teams in F1 good, flag waving American patriotism and whooping bad. Watching the US drag racing annoys me with the teams sponsored by the US Army getting all teary eyed when they win saying they're doing this for the guys in somewhere called Eye-Rack. imi
There's nothing wrong with a bit of patriotism, and national pride - I wish this country had some of it. nothing wrong with a BIT......true. They take it too far; it makes them look stupid. Anyway, the american dude mentioned in the video that "most of the technology comes from the United States"....is that true? Alex
Yes they want to do it for themselves (build it from the ground up using American engineering) but I guess they realise there's no point reinventing the engine when it's been standardised. RedM
The US car would be rubbish unless they can find a course that's dead straight and downhill.
tbourner
The US are already in A1 aren't they? Maybe they should give the cash to a US OEM to set up a team with.
