Anyone ever owned or been in a Porsche 996

The turbo would be nice but probably more than I'm thinking of spending.

I like the idea of the porsche but it always comes down to the same problem. The Supra is a very fast & reliable car. Can even the porsche match it.

I think there is a certain prestige about saying I have a porsche but when it comes down to how it performs etc can it really deliver.

On paper, performance is very similar. I often think a 300bhp N/A will feel punchier than a 300bhp turbo.

I have not driven one of these. Im not looking to buy right away, may not be to late in the year or next if I decide to go that route.

I like to find out as much as I can before hand and owners oppinions are often more valuable than magazine reports.

My other route could be to be a mint 6 speed supra & do the single turbo conversion to it for a driveable 500bhp.

Im not ruling this out but would have to make sure I get everything done by someone who comes highly recommended.

Been down the bad tuning path before and want a hassle free, gauranteed outcome if i decide on the modded car route again.

From my limited experience tuning and hassle free never seem to go together! In my case it always works out the other way around, everytime I change something its just tempting fate to have something else fail.

Two of our family friends have had 996's and both of them really liked the handling. One of them eventually got rid of his as the maintenance costs where stupidly high, he was from NI so choice of places to get work done was a bit limited but even so, it was a bit pricey. Both guys have commented on the handling and especially the brakes being phenomenal. Another complaint was the noise the C4s made while driving about, he said it was very droney.

The 996's were watercooled instead of being aircooled so lost some of that distinctive porsche sound and were considered not proper porsches by hardcore enthusiats.

Alot of the early ones 98 i think had problems with headgaskets going and they also have problems with the RMS seeping oil which i think most will seep a bit out of.

As it's german they dont use the same seals as japs so you wont lose your engine instantly if it goes.

I was looking at one myself but ended up buying a e46 m3 again due to reliability, better interior/options and being alot more practical.

The 996's are good on fuel though!

I say old chap, would you mind terribly if I asked you to write your posts in something resembling English. The thing is, you see, it's rather tricky to fathom what the fukc you're on about.

Thanks awfully.

Were you wearing a large mustache and leather flight jacket as you typed that Jake.....:D
