Markie
Just wondering what can be replaced such as: Plugs, IGN leads, Coils? I am not sure about the IGN system on the supra, can anyone explain what can be/or has to be replaced now and again. i.e. Do they have rotor arm and distrub hidden somewhere, as I could not find one after a quick look about the engine bay. Guest Terry S
if it's a VVTi coil packs & leads ( wasted spark) if a non VVTi TT, all coil on plugs.
Markie
Whats the coil packs? These instead of distributor/rotor arm solutiuon? Would changing plugs, coil packs and leads be an easyish job?
merckx
Whats the coil packs? These instead of distributor/rotor arm solutiuon? Would changing plugs, coil packs and leads be an easyish job? Very easy to do. The plugs are relatively cheap £11 - £65, the other bits aren't cheap!
Markie
Going to change my plugs. Just wondering if its really worth changing these coil pack things. Anyone got idea of price for them, and are they as mentioned above. A distributor/rotor arm less solution. Sorry, but I dont actually know what these do. Not come across them before. merckx
The coil packs generally only get changed if you break them (they can get brittle) or if you have a fault with your ignition, at least £300 from the States. There are 3 sets of 2, have a look. Changing your plugs: http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/spark_plugs/index.html
Ian C
The ignition system in the TT has a coil on each plug. Two coils per coil pack, three coil packs to one engine. These coils are fired by an igniter pack (passenger side suspension turret) rather than a distributor, and the igniter pack's firing timing is controlled by the ECU. The coil packs can have their connectors break down where the wiring loom plugs onto them. The heat makes them brittle over the years, so always be very sympathetic to them when plugging/unplugging and you should be OK. It's when you start wiggling the plugs to get them off or pulling at an off angle that things start breaking. The coils can also degrade over time which isn't normally a problem until you start using single turbos. Any misfire is usually down to increased boost and the spark plugs having too wide a gap and being the wrong heat range. There are no plug leads, no dizzy, and no HT lead to worry about. Edit - these are the non-vvti coil packs I'm on about. The vvti version has three coils and runs wasted spark, I don't know of any problems with them yet, probably as none of them are old enough to manifest anything so far. -Ian
