Virgin 50Mb connection 4 weeks away?

Just a heads up that the 50Mb service is due in a few weeks, so I've heard. It'll apparently be a free upgrade for all those already on the 20Mb XXL service.

According to Virgin, connection speeds have been limited for the last few months due to considerable hardware upgrades at the datacentres preparing for the new service. Trials so far have shown that real world 40Mb download speeds can be achived by almost all those in the trials, with 50Mb acheived in some areas.

New modems will be supplied by Virgin free of charge and most likely any wireless routers will need to be replaced (although a couple of sources at Virgin said that free wireless routers are available for XXL users if you request them).

I've not seen too much on the dates officially but the info came from a few sources inside Virgin media.

According to the virgin website it's £35 per month provided you have their telephone service (which costs £11 per month, so £46 total). According to my bill it's £2 cheaper than the 20Mb service.

Edit, never mind :D

Hmmm, very interesting...

Was under the impression they needed to upgrade the head-ends to docsis 3 to do this? Must check out my area :)

Thats what they've been doing the last year :) According the DC guy I was talking too, 100Mb is a very real possibilty (and in theory the hardware thats gone in can fully support it) with the upgrades they've done.. even to the home.

Isn't that an outrageous amount of bandwidth for a home user? actually 6mb is a crazy amount!?

Yep!

Unless you plan on lots of downloading from multiple sources you really don't need that much.

If all you do is surf and watch the odd video you really won't notice much difference. Sites will still suffer from the delay before the page you've requested is found just like every other service.

Is the XXL package not 50mb and the XL package 20mb? Thats the way i read it. At the moment i am on the M package for broadband and i get 4mb iirc. 10mb is L, 20mb is XL and 50mb is XXL.

As you said some area's already have it. Some info is here.

Also, if you take out the phone and the 50mb XXL i read it as costing £35 all in.

Broadband XXL + Phone M

£35 a month

It's a good step forward, we are starting to catch up with other nations now. Though I do wish they would sort out the caps that they place on usage and stop using the term 'Unlimited' on their products when it clearly is limited. Gets right on my tits that does!!

read 1.5Mb but i don't know if thats true. 20Mb has 768Kb iirc.

Cheers

I have looked through their website but have yet to find out what the upstream speed is. Does anybody know?

My area hasn't been cabled so I'm out of luck anyway, but I'd still like to know if it's something pathetic like 512kbps upstream.

I think he means people on 20Mb will stay on 20Mb as the 50Mb is an upgrade...

Basically what i said earlier ;)

When i first got NTL i was on their top service, every time a new speed came out those on the top package have had the upgrade.

look back at past threads on here to see that.
