Has anyone successfully linked up a wireless router when running NTL broadband off their set top box ?

I can't get it to work at all, wondering if its something to do with NTL ip address settings because its through a set top tv box

Any ideas appreciated ?

what router you using mate? and secondly, have you left the ip/dns settings on "auto detect"??? mite be an idea to power off your box, power off router, power on box and then power on router..... could also be that your limited to having 2 "mac" addresses on that box.... i.e. you've connected 2 diffrent networking devices to box direct in the past hence need to call up tech support and get em reset.....

At the moment I connect to the set top box via the USB port on my laptop using their EZ adaptor (RJ to USB)

IP and DNS setting are set to auto detect, as is the option in IE

I can see the router through the wireless connection, ping and log on to it no problem

Its the TC/IP setting I can't seem to get , just get page cannot be displayed

I might try a wired connection tonight to see if I can at least get a cable connection to the router

Its a Buffalo wireless router

the router should pick up an IP addresses from the set-top box using DHCP. When you then try to access the internet, it'll be seeing the MAC address of the (new) router, so will require you to enter your PIN / Password or whatever.

I haven't done much with NTL, but that's basically it. There are problems with the NTL boxes assigning IP addresses more than once - you must power down/up the NTL box so it'll assign the IP address to a new unit (the router).

Dave, I'm using wireless with NTL broadband. (linksys WRT54G)

Firstly, you need to get rid of that USB adapter, as it's not supposed to be the most reliable of things.

Connect your Laptop upto the STB using a network lead.

If you can't get on the net, you may need to register your laptop again.

Once this is done and you can surf, you need to connect up your router to the STB and then your laptop to the router using either wireless or a network cable.

Because the STB registers the MAC address of your network card, you need to set the MAC address of your router to be the same as the MAC Address of you network card (go into CMD on the laptop and enter ipconfig /all - it's the Physical Address you need).

If your router is set to DHCP for WAN then everything should be ok, but I suggest you power off the STB and router for 30 seconds, then power them back up (STB first and let it connect to the net).

I was using a US Robotics Wireless router until the wireless bit went pop (didnt like being in the computer cupboard with a hot AMD processor I suppose). I just switched to a Linksys unit and its working fine.

I plugged the wireless router in and connected to it via the network cable to the desktop. Checked all the settings were okay and then powered down the desktop, then the wireless router (remember its looking at your router not your PC, nothing you do on the pc will change how it works unless you connect to the router). Then I powered off the cable box for 10 seconds. Powered the cable box back up, powered the wireless box back up and then the pc. Went to browse to the internet and it came up with a 'register your equipment' box, put in my pin and password and then followed the instructions, namely to power off the router and then the cable box and bring them back up.

DId that and it all came up fine. Then my desktop machine decided to get frazzled so Im running wireless off a laptop for the moment.

Sad to say it didn't work last night, I am trying to do a "wired" setup, but its just ain't having any of it

I don't have a NIC though, so I am going through the USB, perhaps thats the issue

I think I need to register the router as at the moment its registered on the laptop

Anyone know the registration address for ntl?

its something like "ntl.world" IIRC
