supra-lover
I have an interview kind of thing next wednesday with RED driving school, just wondered if anybody here works for them? I was after info on what the test is like to become a driving instructor, as you may no I have my hgv and motor bike license so have had my fair chair of theory tests. I don't think i'll have any problems with it tbh just want to know if it's a good job and as good as they make it out to be ... cheers chris;)
SteveR
I suspect you can only "earn up to £30k a year" if you work 7am-10pm every day, take no holidays and ignore the fact £15k of that £30k will go on fuel, consumables (clutch, tyres, clutch again) and servicing. tbourner
I'm thinking about starting up as a private instructor, I put up a thread about it on here a while back. My father in law had some woman start working for him as a meter reader, she was an instructor and examiner with BSM, last year she earnt £14k!!!!! Hardly what they imply you will be earning. Basically there are now FAR too many people working for the big companies, so you'd never get enough business to make anything from it. I think it's the new MLM TBH. ChrisB
I am a driving instructor, deffinatly dont go with red would be my thoughts on the subject. I can honestly not reccomend the job to anyone mainly becuase everyone is doing it and some silly offers too 5 lessons for 40 in my area, that doesnt cover the cost of the lesson even slightly. If you are prepared for a few years with basically no wages then after a while it can become quite a decent job. I love the actual job part of it and now i have been doing it for quite a while starting to get decent pay too. Feel free to pm me if you would like any more info. An idea is too look in your local paper and see the silly offers people are having to do to try and get trade if there is lots its probably going to be a very hard business to get into
Gaz6002
I thought you were going for the plastic policeman job?
Tom
Don't do it dude My Dad's an instructor, 25 years now, there's too many people doing it which is driving down the prices and the amount of work which at the moment around here is very little I suspect all the newer instructors businesses will fail within the first few months and the instructors who have already been in the business for some time should scrape through the next year or so
supra-lover
I thought you were going for the plastic policeman job? far
Like any business you need divergence from competition, if there isnt any then it comes down to price. Just a thought but your USP could be the vehicle you use to give the lessons - something different than the rest of the crowd, this may make competition less relevent and still allow you to command a half decent hourly rate. If this is the case you would need to maybe even change/funnel your target market - but would that limit you? Would there be enough fodder out there to keep you going? An example would be teaching school leavers/sixth formers in a performance vehicle(of course within limits), it would engage every young lad in your area, they would book with you, not your competitors as you are offering divergence and have a USP. Would it eliminate competition? No Would it give you an edge? Yes! You then need to look into the demographics of your geographic area and see if the age group would be able to sustain your business I think in this game if you are not different then the only thing that will attract customer is price, reputation is built with time and many would have already bet you to it on this one. RobSheffield
Far, thats all very intelligent thinking and its lovely, it really is. but i think you are missing the point with the OP Maximum pay for minimum effort.

I think you always need money to make money unless you come up with a blue ocean strategy such as youtube, ebay, tetra-pack etc. I'm still working on that! I'm wondering how much something like a 2002-2004 scooby would cost. Imagine being a 17 year old kid about to take lessons and have an L plated driving school scooby drive past. I would get my phone out quicker than you can say ' boy racer' And what about word of mouth advertising? 'What are you learning in?' a Vauxhall Corsa 'what are you learning in?' 'A modified 200 bhp subura imprezza' Photoshop anyone

Franchises at the best of times are expensive substitutes for what can be done yourself. I think the supra may not be the best choice How about a P1?
