Oil Leak From By Oil Filter

Recommended Posts

I got 10secs down the road today and heard what sounded like a gurgling noise coming from my engine bay, sounded like leaking water. So parked car back up and popped up the bonnet. Oil was squirting out from around where the oil filter is attached to, engine bay was bit of a mess, oil even on underside of bonnet. anyways, cleaned it up a bit in there and tightened up oil filter (took a few turns) as assumed it was a loose oil filter, filled car back up with oil, took 5litres so mustve lost pretty much everydrop! and started engine up again, its still leaking, but not as bad as it was. hopefully its the seal on the oil filter which has gone bang, but is there any other seals or weak points around there where oil could leak/squirt though? guessing this aint a common problem.

Am glad i wasnt razzin down a motorway or bypass when this happened, lucky i had window open n was doin 5mph or would never of heard it until engine had gone pop.

I think Ive got the same problem as you but to a lesser degree.

Just got my car back from an oil change and there appears to be a 'bubble' of oil escaping from by the oil filter where it joins to the block. The underside of the oil filter also feels greasy with a layer of light oil too.

The filter is not loose, so I presume its been tightening too much? Is it safe to drive like this?

May have had the gasket out of alignment when spinning it up and compressed it against the block when it was out of its seat or twisted.

Worth loosening it off and trying to put it back on right. Just use a small can or tub under it to catch the oil.

Shouldnt really seap out that much thought should it between a 3-4k oil change? Its not pissing out, I can just see the oil expand a little in between the edge of the filter and the block when revving the car on idle...

Took the old filter off at the garage today where they informed me that the filter was faulty. Got a new toyota filter and put that on. Dont seem to see as many bubbles etc coming out of the filter when you rev it, but it does bubble ever so slightly when the dump valve has just gone off and you come off the revs.

Any ideas? If its any help my engine is circa 120k miles...

It should'nt bubble at all I'd have thought. Do you have an oil pressure gauge fitted to the car ?
