Chris Wilson
Ok, I know I enter a world of the latest and greatest mobile phones being as essential as the latest trainers, body piercings and MKIV body kit, but take pity on a user of a circa 7 year old base model Nokia. The screen has gone almost blank, only a nice shade of illuminated green is now available, despite hitting, charging and cussing it, although attempts to use the keyboard to dial out work, and I can receive and make calls fine if i think hard what keys to press. After this problem manifested itself I put the SIM card in an even older phone I have, thinking I could use it until I get something newer from Orange. It works, but only maybe a third of my stored phone numbers are now available, and I don't have any hard paper copies of the missing ones. I am told by a friend a bit more knowledgeable of this technology than I am that some numbers will be on the SIM, and some (presumably the missing ones) will still be in the phone itself's memory. Apparently there are software packages and leads available to rescue them from the phone with the defunct screen. What do I need, how much will it rush me, or will an "Orange Shop" do this FOC if I update the damned thing? I think dropping it in the cattle water trough for the third time this winter has put paid to it... I want one of those JCB type things that are supposedly water resistant, preferably NOT the actual bright yellow JCB one, but something similarly indestructible. Do Orange do anything like that? Gizmos like Blue Tooth and cameras are off the horizon in my list of needs, a ring tone like a ship's siren, a vibrate like a sex toy on 3 phase, and the ability to be dropped onto both hard and effluent contaminated surfaces, as well as the odd dunking in near freezing water are much more relevant An update that costs me nothing would be Nirvana. Thanks.

Chris Wilson
To me, that's state of the art , but will it get the phone numbers out of the old phone, that's my main concern? It's a very kind offer, but it looks a bit posh for my needs, IYSWIM? Thanks

It's not posh though, quite basic but maybe a bit small for ageing eyes.
erol_h
if u wana get the numbers off your old phone take it to any decent mobile phone shop and they should be able to remove them for you.
Carl_S
Let's have some pics of your old phone Chris so we can work out what it is, and see if a Nokia kit is available to rescue the numbers, or as Erol says take it to a shop if you are brave enough! There is one phone from nokia - it's very simple, has a green screen I think, and is water proof and shockproof. Should be fine for you, and costs about 40 pounds. chris2o2
Nokia 5210 Chris - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NOKIA-5210-MOBILE-PHONE-UNLOCKED-BOXED-WARRANTY_W0QQitemZ320333425649QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_MobilePhones_MobilePhones?hash=item320333425649&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1308 I think that ticks most of your box's ? j_jza80
Nokia 5210 Chris - . I used to have one of these for work, it's a very durable little phone. Very basic menus and functions (IE very easy to use) I replaced it with a Nokia 6230, which was probably even tougher.
Pete
I've got the Nokia software (I think it's free to download) but connecting it might be interesting without the relevant cable.
Homer
Not sure how to move the memory, think you'd need a cable for that as the old phone seems to have integrated storage rather than removable. I have a Nokia 6230i you're welcome to, they are about as tough as they get without spending money on an ultra durable one.
Scott
If you can find out the model no. of the phone you will be able to download the instructions. From there you would be able to figure out how to transfer all of the numbers from the phone to the sim card without being able to see the screen. Ie menu, press ok to go into phonebook, press menu, press down 4 times to select "copy", press OK, press down to select copy from phone to sim, press ok... job done. Of course this is just an example but if you get the manual this is how i would do it. We used to play a joke on people with certain phones. Told them you could unlock a game by pressing a combination of buttons. This would end up changing the language to french or something or other. Same principle. Oh, i would write down the numbers from the sim before starting though, just to be safe.
caseys
I'd agree that getting a Nokia 5210 if you can still get them would be the best. Same menus as your old phone I believe and they're pretty waterproof and shock proof. Friends that work for the forestry commission are given them due to their ruggedness. Friend dropped his in a bog and managed to retrieve it and it still worked. Good lil phone! Alas one of his died a death after it fell in a tin of gloss paint - the buttons didn't really work after that.
