Well the £15 DVD from Tescos finally gave up the ghost ( Tsk...you cant rely on nowt these days...:))

So what do i get to replace it - I like the look of a Sony Blu-ray (pretending that I know what it does!) for about 170 notes

or how about the PS3? Which I understand provides a really good Blu-ray and games thingy (which GB do I look at - as is I knew what that meant too...)

However at about 20x the price of a DVD do I bovver wiv either?

(notice the subtle use of 'in' text speak creeping in there innit!) :)

Help please guys?

Anyone selling either?

Blu-Ray is the way to go. In a few years DVD's will go the same way as VHS tapes and BD (Blu-ray Disc) will be the common media format.

Don't let the price of discs put you off, they are coming down rapidly. You can get a good selection for between £9.99 and £14.99 (which until recently was the standard dvd price)

If you have a HD ready tv then jump in, you'll be amazed at the quality in comparison to dvd - in the picture, sound and the extra features it allows.

If you don't have a HDTV, then you wont notice a benefit so you might as well get another £15 dvd player.

As for choosing between the BD player and PS3, it depends on if you or any family visitors might play games on it. If so then i'd recommend the console, and unless you are going to store loads of movies and about 1000 CD albums on there, the 40GB hard drive size will be ample.

If gaming isn't likely to feature, then the BD player is the cheaper option.

Had a ps3 since release day in USA and only watched my first blu ray last week.

Definately been missing out so bought 3 for the price of 2 at amazon twice over.

I didnt expect much difference tbh but the colours and clarity are so much better over my dvd player in the other room.

Weather its the ps3 or a blu ray player, thats the way I would go.

It depends if you think you'll play games, stream media, view the net etc on the PS3. If not, go for the stand alone unit.

deffo get a ps3, its the way to go. I have a ps3 and a bluray dvd player and the ps3 gets my vote every single time, it has options that you can tweak even further to get more out of your bluray dvd in terms of quality etc.. plus you can go online with it for web browsing via tv, you can use it as a media centre to stream movies you download to your pc via your ps3 to your tv, you can play music, edit photos, plus its a kick ass games console. Oh and to top it all off it will play your ps1 games as well :)

get one bought! ;)

:yeahthat:

The PS3 has a very good Blueray player and when used with a good HD TV the quality is jaw dropping.

I think that's my birthday present sorted, I might as well get a PS3. Screen in bedroom is a 1680x1050 thing with DVI, so not quite 1080p but not far off. Do you reckon I'd do better to swap it with the 26" 1920x1200 screen that I have on my computer downstairs, or will that resolution suffice? I might have to run at 720p or something I suppose ?

I have been wanting a decent network media player to replace my cheap Freecom MG35 thing, so a ~£250 PS3 sounds like it might do the trick.

I just bought a £48 HDMI upscaling DVD player last night too, so that the kids could take the £15 one and I could use a HDMI > DVI cable in place of the horrible composite I've been using up 'til now.

I have watched a few Blu-Rays on my PS3 and the quality is brilliant. If you have a decent size TV like 42"+ then it's spot on, otherwise its pointless.

Blu-Rays havent taken over yet and are still more expensive, even to rent, so unless you really have to have one i wouldn't bother yet until overall price comes down.

By then, it will be time to invest in NEWER technology, New HD formats and blu-ray will be yesterdays news.

I do like my PS3, dont use it much at all....but then again, it was disposable income that I used to buy it in the 1st place so not really that concerned.

IF the choice was to get either a BlueRay DVD plauyer for 170 or a PS3, then I would seriously consider the PS3 instead.

There is talk of higher capacity Blu-ray disks being developed, There are already 25gb and 55gb disks available, I think Toshiba have already got a working 500GB bluray disk available I read somewhere recently too. I think in the future as prices drop you will see this technology coming to Bluray players which will elimitate "box sets". One disk for an entire series and all the extras etc..

As always there will undoubtably be new technology coming out but I think Bluray is a safe bet for the next media generation, DVD has been around for around 12 years now, so if you look at it in that perspective.. :)

Can someone explain to me how to set the ps3 up right? So many options i dont what to do for the best.

Aslo how do i stream movies from the lap top to the ps3?

Sorry for being dumb

For streaming you can use windows media player, although typical microsoft this isnt always reliable.. I personally use TVERSITY, its straight forward to set up and there are guides on there website to help you set up streaming to your ps3.

As for settings on the ps3 for video options, while watching a movie press triangle and in the on screen display there are some additional settings under display I beleive. You can also activate more by going into the settings section and then into display, from the main playstation menu. :)

I remember reading something about this. The interesting thing was that in some cases all that was needed was a firmware update for the drive.
