Ewen
We all got told to go home at lunchtime today as the weather was bad with more forecast in the afternoon. I was really dreading the drive home, even with Snow Mode engaged the Supra is a 300+ hp sledge on icy roads. Roads were pretty nasty, but amazingly, drivers kept their distance, indicated well, let people in, slowed gradually and seemed to anticipate lights and junctions. I was genuinely surprised, the journey to and from work is normally an obstacle course.
AndrewOW
I indicate as automatically as looking in mirrors and over my shoulder before pulling out etc If you do these things without thinking (as I was taught) you always do them and *hopefully* never cause an accident or upset anyone. If you have to think "is there someone near because if so I ought to signal" this is a complete waste of thinking time. I was told a little story by someone once, that when this female driver was asked why she never indicated, she replied with 'I didn't realise I had to indicate during the day' ! We're doomed Mr Mainwaring!
Chewie
An ex-girl friend never indicated. Her logic was it kept everybody guessing what she was going to do. Inevitably after 16 years driving like this she eventually did have an accident while going round a roundabout. A car pulled out onto the roundabout and she hit it. Amazingly she got off. How? She claimed she was indicating.
Carl_S
I like people that don't indicate as it keeps me on my toes, and gives me a reason to moderate my driving to accommodate this new potential hazard. When it happens on the motorway, and people (often BMW Mini's, Chrysler, or BMW X5's) weave in and out of the lanes, it usually cracks me up big time. Chav type vehicles sometimes do it around town too. The downside to this pleasure is that sometimes I am annoyed by it. I think it is something to do with skilled drivers who don't bother to indicate - which is fun, and bad drivers - which is less fun to be around. Chewie
Also after spending a lot of time riding motorbikes, you develop a paranoid instinct that all other road users including other bikers are complete uttah nuttahs and therefore should be treated with extreme caution. ADL Mark
I have to reverse the car out onto a road in the morning Isn't that against the law anyway, reversing on to a public highway? Agree on the rest though. I think this is generally a sign of society and the way it has gone or is heading. People in general just don't care any more, everybody is becomming selfish and self-centred, intent only on themselves being 'ok'. Peoples driving standards really annoy me, I do my best to drive at a sensible distance away from people, indicate my intentions, get on the side of a junction I need to be (this winds me up, people turning right but so far left you could get another car up their outside), be polite and acknowledge other people. Even as a pedestrian, saying thanks to people who stop on crossings. The little things go a long way..

Tannhauser
Isn't that against the law anyway, reversing on to a public highway? It's legal provided the driver just shuts his eyes and goes.
Swampy442
I think it's because cars nowadays are so comfy that people literally are cut off from their surroundings and as such they don't feel the outside world - and in so doing are cut off from everything in it, other cars included. You need to drive a pug 205 diesel!! People who think that red light rules don't apply for the first few seconds of redness. Agreed, even worse when youre the first car in a queue of roadside works (the ones where one lane is closed off) The light goes green, you pull off only to be met by a car coming towards you at 40 that blatantly jumped the red light at his end. Lots of locked up brakes, sheepish faces, laughing workers and cone moving to let said driver get out of the way I was told a little story by someone once, that when this female driver was asked why she never indicated, she replied with 'I didn't realise I had to indicate during the day' ! We're doomed Mr Mainwaring! Another topic all of its own, women drivers. I truely believe they are the worst drivers on the road (not all, just most). I followed a car yesterday in Derby, you know when you look in the rear view mirror of the car in front you generally see a pair of eyes? I saw a chin and scarf
stevie_b
I 100% agree with the OP, and most other comments in this thread. It was the falling driving standards I see every day that prompted me to start a thread about whether people should need to re-take their driving test every x (e.g. 10) years. I believe that it's not a conscious decision not to indicate, but people simply forget or (in a few worrying cases) don't know they should. The poll I attached had a mixed response (tried searching for it briefly but couldn't find it). My thinking is, if people's driving is up to scratch, then they won't need lessons, just one test (£30?) every 10 years. Having to re-take every 10 years would mean: 1) those who forget to indicate would fail ,and have to try again until they remember 2) it might make those who know what they should be doing (and can "turn it on" during a re-test) but choose not to during normal driving, to think for a few moments and maybe some of them would be better drivers, if only for a few months (days??) after their re-test. benkei
Another topic all of its own, women drivers. I truely believe they are the worst drivers on the road (not all, just most). I followed a car yesterday in Derby, you know when you look in the rear view mirror of the car in front you generally see a pair of eyes? I saw a chin and scarf On women drivers... I was at a small, 3-lane island, left lane for left and striaght on, middle lane for straight on, and right lane for right... Woman in a BMW in the left, me in the middle, van in the right... Van wants to go right, I want to go straight and BMW wants to go straight, we all pull off as the island is now clear, van goes to inside lane, I pull off heading for the middle lane, woman in BMW pulls off and attempts to stright-line the island forcing me to slam on my brakes and hit the horn! Other times I've seen women indicating left 1 or 2 exits before they actually want to leave the island! I'd rather them not indicate at all than indicate incorrectly! Lucky I'm used to expecting everyone else to complete idiots and not have a clue where they are or what they are doing... This helps me avoid accidents
