dan4
Right i can work wonders with a spanner but pc's/laptops are really not my thing:blink: so hopefully somebody can offer advice.... My lap top all of a sudden is dog slow online and sometimes wont even load pages at all (taken me a few attempts to get this posted!) Yes i am a dumb ass on pc's so even obvious suggestions are useful:search: I have tried virus check and some windows defender scan but nothing was found
Supranature
Do a Defragment. It should be done at regular (monthly) intervals, so I would suggest that you do it and leave it on all night to complete, beleive me it will probably take 5 hours anyway! You should find it runs MUCH better after this. Mine did, but I hasten to add, I'm no "Wizard".

Angarak
Possible causes: 1> Low Disk Space: Check that you're not low on hard drive space (the hard drive that windows is installed on). 2> Excessive Process Consumption: Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and select Task Manager, then when you open the browser and go surfing on the Internet. If it seems slow, leave the browser open and then switch to Task Manager, click on the 'Performance' tab and check what the CPU/Memory usage is like. If it seems excessive (ie: CPU over 50% / Memory over 70%) there could be a running application that is causing the problem. Whilst still in Task Manager, click on the 'Processes' Tab, then click on the column title "CPU". Clicking on this title will order the currently running processes by CPU Consumption in Ascending order, clicking it a 2nd time will order them in Descending order. Check to see if any processes are consuming high amounts of CPU usage (you can ignore the "System Idle Process" which is usually in the 90% range). If nothing looks out of the ordinary, click on the "Mem Usage" column and see if any process(es) are consuming large amounts of memory. You can try ending any offending process(es) to see if it improves the speed. 3> Slow Internet Network It could just be a problem on your network, somewhere between you and your ISP, or your ISP and your target website. You can open a command prompt (START > RUN > Type "cmd" without quotes). At Command Prompt enter: "tracert http://www.target_website.com" (without quotes). This will perform a trace route from your computer to the website you're trying to view. It will show the ping (reply) times for each point in the network. High pings (over 70) would indicate a network issue. Other... You could also try clearing browser cache and cookies, defragging your hard drive as mentioned already (it wont defrag if your using the computer!), or installing a software package to maintain your PC such as TuneUp Utilities 2009.
