Aerotop Dave
What do you use it for? What software do you use or do you just use XPs own burning app? (both my PCs aren't set up at the moment and my breezeblock lappie only runs 98, so I dunno what support XP offers) Do I want one? Basically most games now come on DVD and I haven't got a drive - trying to decide if I should just buy a cheapo £15 drive or a £35+ burner. I don't do camcording but we have 2 digital cameras that do movies, and I got a DVD recorder a few months back. Although it's got built-in editing abilties I dunno if having PC editing would be better. I guess I'm just finding out if I would actually use it or not. Any thoughts? Jake
For burning DVDs I almost exclusively use Nero 6. Let me know if you'd like an *ahem* evaluation copy.
toyotasuprauk
I've got a dvd burner but I've only ever used it once! I wouldnt mind an evaluation copy if possible?
Digsy
I've got a fairly whizzy dvd burner, but its ony singe layer (bought it when dual layer was just coming out and I'm not an "early adopter"). I use Nero 6 for DVD burning, but I don't actually burn DVDs that often.
Pete
Nero 6. Use it all the time. Being able to backup 4.7Gb at once is awesome! Turning your DV tapes into DVD - fantastic!
Todd
Nero 6, combined with Dr Divx you can get 5-6 films on one dvd, great. And as said, a def bonus for backing up
JohnK
check out http://www.novatech.com they have some 8x dual layer +/- drives for £25ish
Steviekid
I prefer Roxio CD and DVD creater to nero but just because I'm more used to it. To backup commercial DVD films you'll need DVD Decrypter (to bypass encryption, surprise surpise) and DVD shrink to fit them onto a single layered disk, both of which you can download for free. Jake
Roxio EasyCD Creator makes baby Jeebus cry. I've converted a couple of folks from Roxio to Nero after they had problems with it. It's a weird bit of software in the way it tries to take over your system.
Jake
I wouldnt mind an evaluation copy if possible? You can download the latest version (6.6.0.8) from http://www.ahead.de I've PM'd you a serial number to make it into the full version. MONKEYmark
i have 3 of them. tend to stick with pioneer as they more popular for support. had a nec and it did not seem to like certain dvdr`s nero6 for music and data and making dvd backups dvd decrytor dvd shrink disc jugglar pro good quick way to free up hd space when downloading lots. not gone with dual layer as the blanks still too expensive. Digsy
Roxio used to be Adaptec, is that correct? I used to love Adaptec but was foeced to change to Nero because back then Adaptec could write long filenames to files on CD (essential for my MP3 player in the car). Wouldn't go back now. Mind you, Nero has more than its fair share of bugs - mostly in the other applications in the suite.
terribleturner
I started on Roxio, but now use Nero as it's just so much better and easier to use.
lpher
dvd shrink Iiik! I reckon youre not using a bigscreen-tv/plasma/lcd then? DVDshrink is really awfall at making good quality dvd-5's out of dvd-9's BUT...ill have to agree that its MUCH faster...than the ones that offer the best quality though I use Pinnacle InstanCopy for this purpose....as i said...its MUCH slower than DVDShrink etc. BUT...the end result is really that much better...IMHO So...if youre planning on upgrading your telly to a bigscreen pretty soon....id adwise to stay off of DVDshrink
Aerotop Dave
So making back up copies of stuff is pretty much the only use for a burner then?
Digsy
Well Ive set myself up with video editing stuff and want to get into it again at some point. I was just teaching myself how when my ex-wife took custody of the camcorder

Digsy
When I *ahem* back up a DVD I alwaya only use the main feature with 5.1 sound - party as an incentive to one day buy the pukka item and also to limit the amount of compression that DVD Shrink has to apply. I've not made a DVD that I couldn't watch comfortably on my 42" plasma yet. Don't forget that DVD Shrink has a "deep analysis" option as well... MONKEYmark
if you back up with no extras so you not compressing the film it should be same as original if the dvd is dvd 5 you can do 100% backup on a single layer dvdr if the dvd is dvd 9 you can chop extras out and foreign soundtracks or just buy a dual layer writer and back it up 100% heard a lot of bad things with plasmas with dead pixels. is these new LCD tv`s better than plasmas. Digsy
heard a lot of bad things with plasmas with dead pixels. is these new LCD tv`s better than plasmas. Same as TFT monitors, they have a "tolerance level" applied by the manufacturer which you supposedly cannot get around, even if your "six maximum dead pixels" are right in the centre of the screen. It sucks, really. I feel like I'm tempting fate here, but I've had mine for two years now and I don't even have one stuck or dead pixel yet. [touch wood] As an aside, I had a from-new stuck pixel on my PDA and yesterday I noticed that it has un-stuck itself!
Ian C
7 day cooling off period Be very careful with the packaging, and if there are any dead pixels that you don't like the look of, package back up and send back under the 7 day section of the trading standards act. No reason needs to be given and no restocking fee can be charged, it just costs you the postage. Then buy another one Repeat until you are in pixel nirvana. -Ian
MONKEYmark
sister had a fault on her 50" sony before. she was going to get a plasma and was told sony wont fix plasma unless it has 7 or more dead pixels. so she sent her 50" tv back and went up to a 60" looks good but cable tv is crap on it. just blows a crap signal and shows faults up more.
