plus1
If thats your budget then, Halfords. I paid £600 for mine 20 years ago and that was cheap then.
plus1
Ribble cycles near the docks. They may have a bargain second hand bike in that was close to a grand when new.
Carl_S
Please don't go to halfords for a sub £300 bike, I got my sexy specialized from my local bike shop for less than that brand new. Have fun.

Have fun. I too got a specialized bike from a local shop for around the £350 mark, but unfortunalty, they have closed down and they only sold mountain bikes! danhicks22
I've found leisure lakes (leisurelakesbikes.com) to be very helpful. Had a GT Avalance and Specialized Pitch from them in the last 18 months. For a good road bike you probably want to look closer to the £500-£600 mark (as with any bike really) but you can probably get something reasonable for £300, especially if you manage to get an end-of-line one. Please avoid Halfrauds though, unless you read lots of impartial reviews about a particular model. Local bike shops are always a good thing if you can find one. I have had, and still have santa cruz's (heckler, super light and currently a Blur) I also have a halfords carerra vanquish road bike I cannot fault the bike at all as the company that build the carerra frames, also build GT's frames as well as releasing there own brand - merida - they have some good deals on at the mommet. Chewie
60 miles is quite a length to pedal for a novice. If you're going to do a road event buy a racing bike. Don't bother with a MTB. You'll start having problems at about 20 miles. £300 will not get you much. Best to buy used but make sure you get the right frame size. Only buy a triple chainset if you're doing mountains/hills. A double compact is all you need for flat/undulating.

colsoop
Does your work have a ride to work scheme ? If so you may be able to get a nicer bike with your money.
danhicks22
I have had, and still have santa cruz's (heckler, super light and currently a Blur) Any Santa Cruz influence in your forum name by any chance? I would love a Heckler but sadly was out of my budget. Not ridden my Pitch yet, only got it a couple of weeks ago and been too busy - looking forward to it though. I went to Scotland last year on my GT hardtail and did various runs; Laggan, Golspie, Balblair etc, which was awesome. Hoping to go again this year and hoping for a bit more comfort on the full suspension. Halfords do do some decent bikes, I just wouldn't trust them to give me impartial advice about which ones are good. I'm also not sure I'd trust them to put the bike together properly. But that could be the usual horror stories.

danhicks22
might be i only buy the bikes from halfords, but build them my self Ahh, good thinking. I'm too lazy/inexperienced for that sort of thing. So whereabouts do you go when you go off-road? Anywhere over near Gloucestershire way, or within reasonable travelling distance, you can recommend? In Chelt I use to go down Daisybank Hill, Leckhampton, Cleeve Hill, Bredon Hill and there's always the Forest of Dean.
merckx
Definately get a secondhand bike if you've only got £300, it will be much better quality than a new one for that price.
tooquicktostop
Not that I know anything about bikes but Decathlon had some very nice looking bikes in stock when I visited there at the weekend (buying more horseriding gear for my little one !), a lot of people seemed to be buying and the prices were within your budget in most cases
steb9780
Ribble Cycles mate near Preston docks. They have some good deals on there usually. Loads of the cycling lads at work have them for there daily commute.
