DannyB
Stick with your big names for choices of lens in the future, for this out of the two id go with the Nikon. But saying that i brought my Olympus cheap when it came out, and thats done me very well and had a few decent shots out of it
jevansio
I found my Canon 400D an amazing bit of kit as an entry level DSLR, the 350D is even cheaper. You've obviously seen the shot I can get out of it & I'm a camera novice.
caseys
Canon 350D or 1000D is you can stretch to it. I'd avoid the Sony tbh. What lens are you going for? Example : http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Cameras%20and%20Lenses/Digital%20SLRs/products/Canon/EOS%201000D%20%2018-55%20IS%20Lens-75075/Show.html Not bad, £350 with lens. £300 body only. Also look at getting a Joby Gorillapod, as they're awesome little action tripods :-) http://www.joby.com/products/gorillapod/original/ I think I bought the missus her SLR and compact version off Amazon for £35 before Christmas and they kindly threw in a couple of lens pens too. Out of curiosity are you also gonna do any post-production work? Ever played with Aperture? We persuaded you to buy an iPhone, hopefully you like it enough and we can persuade you to buy a Mac Strongarm whoever you buy it from to throw in at least 4gb of memory with it as shooting in RAW is space consuming but worthwhile. Currently in the land of the SLR as in Singapore on holiday, canon really do rule the roost here! Then Nikon. Memory is more expensive here than back at home! Was gonna buy myself a nice 16Gb extreme-III card and it's £40 more! fiends.
chris2o2
I wanted an SLR but opted for a Canon G9 - its got a lot of the SLR features but is just larger than most compacts and get some excellent reviews . £219 from Amazon im sure , the newer G10 is a bit more . http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonG9/ Just an idea , bit easier to use but very capable . DodgyRog
I am looking at the moment as well and from my research and watching the Gadget Show;), the Canon 450D seems to be the best entry level SLR http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B00131W8IW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1233480775&sr=8-1 All the reveiws I can find just seem to praise it http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_450D_Digital_Rebel_XSi/verdict.shtml The image stabiliser is the selling point for me thou:D If you look around you can get tit for under £400 now, the cheapest I have managed, knocking down the South West camera store to £350:d
Soop Dogg
Have to agree - Canon 450D would be my choice of entry level DSLR at the moment. I've had the 350D for a few years now and it's done me very well. The 1000D is ok, but I'd have a 450D over it.
