Just got back from Reykjavik

Class One

Recommended Posts

We were meant to go out on Saturday for a Northern Lights experience, however the weather was too bad and it was cancelled. :(

Luckily the weather cleared up last night and we were taken out about 30km out of Reykjavik into the mountains. We waited for about an hour in freezing temperatures, but all we saw was a slight bright band in the sky, that looked like a light cloud. We were a bit gutted to say the least, as this was the event we were most looking forward to.

We all trudged back onto the bus and headed back towards town, when suddenly the sky lit up. We stopped and I managed to get a few pics.

The Aurora is easy to photograph, provided you know what to do.

Tripod, low f stop setting (mine only goes as low as f5.6 on that lens) ISO 800 and 30 second exposure. Some of the tourists got off the bus with their cameras and took pics using flash. Needless to say, all they got was a black screen and soon got the message.

That particular flare lasted about 20 minutes or so varying in intensity. All in all I guess we had about 40 minutes or so of really good Aurorae.

Global warming??? :D

Looks seriously impressive Doug. Its one place I'd love to go one day.

I remember seeing almost exactly the same lights in the sky over Bristol many years back, a very surreal experience.

well thats convinced me to go now, cheers Doug.

Who did you book through, any recommendations for a short photo trip ?

We booked direct with Iceland Air, they have had some cracking deals on recently. I would definately recommend doing the Golden Circle tour. We didn't and we wished we had the time to do it, but everyone we spoke to raved about it. That can be booked via their website or you can book at the hotel.

In retrospect we would have booked out tours once there, so that we could have managed our time better. We stayed in the Hilton, but there is a wide range of hotels to suit all budgets.

Alcohol is alot more expensive there but being canny we bought several bottles of wine in Duty Free at Heathrow on the way out and had the odd lazy afternoon or two in our room. ;)

It wasn't shockingly expensive though and there are some bargains to be had. And everything that you buy as gifts etc you can obtain a tax refund at the airport on the way back.

It was the first time where I've been abroad where fellow Brits didn't let the side down. Not a chav in sight. Long may it remain that way.
