Some help and advice please

AdzC

Recommended Posts

I passed my Direct Access this week and on Thursday I went to look at a 1997 GSXR 750 SRAD. Not knowing a great deal about bikes just yet I got a friend to come with me on Friday and give the bike a look over.

He did so and took it fir a ride with everything seeming fine for the age etc.

Anyway I put a £100 deposit down after confirming that I could afford the insurance. I have just run a HPi check and it has come back as a Cat C write off back in June last year.

Should I still go ahead with the purchase? Balance being £1500 left to pay so in total £1600 for the bike.

Thanks

Where did you do your direct access?

Mike

I did it with BCL on Talbot Road, Blackpool. Highly recommend them.

I did my CBT in December then my DAS last week. I had never ridden a bike before and they got me through my test in no time.

If you are thinking about doing it get it done before the end of March as the test changes to an EU regulated one which is supposed to be a right pain in the arse.

Any queries feel free to PM me.

Good move AdzC! Best thing I ever did was my DAS. nearest thing to flying 3 feet off the ground. I recommend as a good first bike a 600 Hornet. Great Honda reliablity and build quality. Suzis and Kwax don't come anywhere near them. Then when you really get into biking get something bigger. Don't buy anything new. Somewhere in your fledgling years you will drop that bike. I'm now whizzing around on a Triumph 1050 Speed Triple. I luv it, dare I say more than my Supe.

Thanks Chewie. I just wish I had done it sooner like just after my 21st like I was planning to do.

I did my DAS on a naked 600 Hornet which I must say I enjoyed thoroughly. I would like a nice supersport bike, I understand that I will have to be careful but the throttle works both ways so we'll see what I end up with.

Get your deposit back mate, There are plenty of srad's around for that price. Wouldn't risk a cat c bike myself

Just to update I have spoken to the trader and he has said there's no problem with getting my deposit back.

Just got to pop and see him so he can refund to my card.

I don't think so mate. Took one out for a test ride and to be honest it's all about being controlled.

I'm not planning on jumping on it and going screwing round. It's more a case of buying something that I'm not going to want to chop in within 6 months time.

Isn't a GSXR750 a bit much for an inexperianced rider?

I really hope you stick to that. I've been riding over 20 years - if I'd had a GSXR750 immediately after passing my test I would now be dead. Even with the bikes I did have - which were massively less powerful than that - looking back, I'm pretty lucky I'm not dead.

As with most things, it takes time to build experience. If you're going to be sensible for a while, you don't really need a GSXR750! Riding a bike is very different from driving a car.

Thanks for the advice Dave. I have thought long and hard about it but keep coming to this decision.

Going to take it steady and ride within my limits.
