5 speed box????

i heard from a trader on here(to my face) they can take 500bhp if in good condistion, and one of there regulars has 600bhp going through the box but its seen better days.........

 

but at the end of the day the 5 speed can only go to 170mph and then its done...

There's also a lot of people that have shredded 2nd and 3rd gears and the syncro at a lot less power than that (mostly NA-T's). They do seem to be okay for BPU, but not really a reliable option for a single.

 

The gear ratio work out okay for accelration, but it would be horrible on the motorway, the 6th gear on the getrag really makes it an easy and comfortable cruiser with reasonable MPG.

 

The other issue using an NA drivetrain is the diff, you really do not want an open diff with BPU power. It'd be best at the least to change to an LSD version with NA ratio (can be very hard to find)

Sorry mate, I didn't realise you had a 5spd yourself, was only basing it on a BPU 5spd I drove many years ago.

 

Do you still have the NA diff in it? How is the through-gear acceleration in 1st-3rd? The one I drove I found the gears a bit long, so acceleration was okay, but it took a little time to get it going in 1st and it dropped a bit in boost between shifts due to going out of the peak torque band.

 

I'm asking for good reason as I'm toying with dropping a GTE engine into my NA, but have reservations about the gear ratio and diff.

yea ok accerlation is ok, you do get a lot of shudder if you get a bad start.. id like to see what a 6-speed is like to compare, but it does shift through the gears, when you off and running. i must admint i do like the 5-speed weather its because i used to 5 speeds but it is good fun

 

to go into traction abit more i've never had traction contol on any car so i don't know what its like but it is livly in the wet. the dry is manly ok unlike you do a swedish flick ;)

 

let me know the next meet your going to and you can have a spin, hope to get it up to BPU by the end of feb got a 2 row fmic on my bedroom floor lol

quite allot of n/a's come with an lsd. my szr did and conncl's sz has one too. But i see what you saying if they did have an open diff.

Thanks mate :) Are you going to JapFest? It's not the best place to get a ride in a car, but would be good to have a chat about it. I had a 6spd BPU for many years so would be good to see what your experiences are with the 5spd

 

yea planning to go to as many meets as humanly possible this year:innocent:

 

not that bad of place:sly: can jump on the A45 easily for a bit of a speed run

 

drop me a Pm nearer the time and i'll give you my number can meet up and you can give it a go, be interesting to see what your option is over the 6 speed(see if i need to save another 3 grade for mods lol)

i have been thinking of droping a 5 speed box out of the mkiii. the 5 speed box will be quicker on accelration than the 6 speed box.

 

In-gear acceleration might be quicker, but the reservation I have is that it's slower off the mark (by some degree) and the due to the long ratio drops off peak torque between changes, at leats this is how the car I drove felt compared to the 6spd. Looking forward to see how couv3z car goes as it's been many years since I last drove a 5spd TT.

 

Theres one up for grabs on here with everything needed in for sale section somewhere. Around £600 from what i remember

 

Ouch, are the MKIII boxes really that much more expensive? I paid £350 for an NA engine, box, prop, diff, clutch, etc - in fact the entire drivetrain. The box and clutch itself was only valued at £80, but that was for a W58.
