DodgyRog
You reach down with some tip-ex and draw a line all the way from the inside to the outside. If they separate,(after a drive or if really bad a few engine revs) as mine have in first post, your crank pulley is shagged:(

supraGZaerotop
is this a common thing then, mines done 83000miles now, is it a service item? think il change it to be on safe side
dangerous brain
Its an age thing I'd say. Rubber perishes with time and heat. About ten years is most rubber's longevity so don't be hugely surprised if you need a replacement on an M,N,P reg. It probably is a service item but who is still getting toyota to service their cars to the schedule after 10 years??
GazzaGSi
Wish I'd of known about the tipex test when I had mine. I got through 2. (serves me right to buy one in the for sale section). First time pulling out on a slip road from some services. Second time on the motorway. As said, virtually no to super heavy steering at speed could of been fatal. Its cost me more than a new pulley on both occasions. First time a new rad and second time a smoothed down and resprayed passenger side door. Some how its bounced out and spun up the side of the car with a scratch about a mm deep. Not happy. Glad you spotted yours before anything bad could of happened! I only found through reading a load of threads about squeaky/squealy noises that might be belt related but didn't go away after replacing the belt
den1
Standing in front of the car..looking down at the crank pulley. The centre bolt that holds the pulley onto the crankshaft...To remove the bolt does it turn anticlockwise or clockwise ( Left Handed Thread) Thanks

They are usually ridiculously tight

DodgyRog
Mines booked in for Saturday, decided not to attempt it myself. I need it back running asap and can't afford to run the risk of me not being able to do it and putting back the repair any further. Paul Whiffin has said he won't have any stock until Thursday (at the earliest), so wouldn't of been able to get it to me by Saturday. So I had to cough up to Mr.T £236 inc VAT for the crank pulley and a new bolt just incase. Been told to expect 1 1/2 hour labour bill, which my local mechanic charges £60 an hour. So hopefully back running for around £
