HDMI cable advice

Recommended Posts

Recently bought a new HD 1080p Plasma. It came with a upscalling DVD player to full HD.

I need to purchase an HDMI cable and was wondering is there much difference between cables that mention that they are 1080HD compatible to other cables that don't.

Anyone have any recommendations if there is a difference which are best and what ones to avoid.

Cheers

Cheers for the advice guys.

Has anybody actually seen the difference between a cheap one and an expensive one on the same tv?

This is the angle I am coming from the most, I used to think that way re speaker cable. I have heard how much good decent cable and connectors makes to a sound system.

However is it the same or is it a case of as above a cable is a cable when dealing with DVD/TV signals.

A cable is a cable when dealing with *digital* signals, like HDMI. DVD/TV/Speaker are generally Analogue so a good cable would help.

Problem I saw on my projector was that with a cheap cable you get sparklies on the picture at high resolutions - basically white dots randomly popping up all over the place.

A good cable or repeater prevents these - but you normally only see this on a long run of cable?

What sort of cable / signal was this? HDMI?

i dont really think a cable is just cable when it comes to hdmi ,it's all about the conectors they have, gold 24k i'd recomend and the data speed that travels thrugh the cable, with a 25£ maplin cable i'd get 576 p when i play games and with a 60£ sony cable i'd get full hd on games ,on movies i'll get full all cables i've tried

Found this on AVforums (cheers M), interesting read. http://www.audioholics.com/education/cables/long-hdmi-cable-bench-tests

Only really important bit from that article...

Your take-away from all this should be the following:

* At lengths less than 4 meters you can just about use silly string (OK, not really) and get HDMI to pass at any current resolution. At less than 3 meters you'll even extend that to 12-bit color and possibly the next crazy idea HDMI Licensing decides to throw at consumers. Don't spend a lot on these cables and if you want to save money you won't let anyone at a big box store talk you into buying from them.

* At long lengths (over 10 meters) you really need to pay attention to the manufacturer if you don't want to risk running into potential problems with 1080p and future formats such as Deep Color. With that said, just about any cable at or under 10 meters will pass 720p/1080i and nearly everyone will pass 1080p at 8-bit color as well.

So I guess as long as your TV and HDMI device aren't in different rooms you don't really need to worry about it too much.

I went for a few of these from http://www.dixons.co.uk for my setup (Panasonic Viera 1080p 50" Plasma, Onkyo 606 amp, Xbox 360, PS3 etc. etc.):

Logik 1.8 metre HDMI Cable

Product code: 559222

http://www.dixons.co.uk/product/500/OW/559222.jpg

In Stock

Price £9.77

Standard Delivery £4.95

Value 1.8M HDMI Cable for High Definition Audio and Image connectivity. The standard HDMI to HDMI Connecting Lead connects your HD TV to Games Consoles, Recorders, Home Theatre Systems and Hard Drives HDMI - HDMI Connectivity

Gold plated connectors

Supports High definition

---

Copes fine with Xbox 360 games at 1080p and Blu Rays at 1080p. Image quality is outstanding - don't see why you need to spend more if all your kit is roughly in the same place.

Cheers,

Brian.
