Gerry
I'm fencing in the GB Veterans Fencing Championships at the weekend and have just heard that Bruce Dickinson front man of Iron Maiden is in my age group... Cat 2 (Old Gits) Apparently he's fenced for years and was on the Great Britain team some time ago. It says on Google that he has also recently (?) trained as an airline pilot (not sure if I'd be happy if I knew he was in charge of my Jumbo on the way to the States) ! When I hear his (their) name I mostly think of drugged up, boozed up, "goes to eleven" types Suppose everybody grows up Should be fun

He does indeed, read an article on BBC news earlier today. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7842422.stm

European Cup, 1989 - he was ranked 7th in the UK at one point... maybe that point... I don't know. I've been a Maiden fan for years and the fencing thing was always something that came up in interviews. Have fun, always comes across as an interesting chap, would be good to meet him, even better to beat him

He has a full time pilots job and Iron Maiden tour around this, they even have a jet painted in the maiden colours for touring that Bruce flies everywhere. merckx
Run to the Hills! He's been on the TV on one of the discovery channels "Flying Heavy Metal", he landed the Shuttle in a simulator and made a perfect landing.
Gerry
Wikipedia: When the recordings were finished in December 1987, Dickinson moved to Bonn, so that he could be close to the West Germany training centre for fencing. At the end of the '80s Dickinson was at the peak of his fencing career, eventually ranked as high as 7th in Great Britain in the men's foil discipline, while his club side, the Hemel Hempstead Fencing Club, represented Great Britain in the European Cup of 1989. Just found out he's a "foilist" which all fencers know are soppy fairys He's entered in Epee (heavier, stiffer modern duelling sword) so he's in for a beating

Know nothing about Kendo, is it full contact and are there rules (conventions) like in foil & sabre - but not Epee

Animal
That should be a fun day, Bruce has always come across as a really personable bloke, and has indeed done many things. Unfortunately the Iron Maiden livery had to be removed from the plane when they started doing flights to Africa as the locals believed the image of Eddie on the tail to be a devil and would not bord the plane (or any planes near it) in fear of a curse. Good luck at the weekend.

Gerry
Met him in the first round, very nice, tidy fencer, but he couldn't cope with my unorthadox style Gatso 5 = Bruce 0 Great day, now UK rank 10 with one more competition to get up to top four and selection to GBR team to fight in Russia in the Autumn - not likely, but possible.
